Most people that leave the Midwest move to somewhere warmer.

It will be interesting how long the move West / Southwest continues. The water levels can not support this continued population growth. Which creates an interesting opportunity for Illinois. They should build a pipeline that routes water from Lake Michigan to multiple exit points west including the Colorado River and California. The Great Lakes hold 20% of the worlds freshwater and the West's drought / wildfires / farmers could use Illinois' version of oil - fresh water.

If this does not happen then the migration west will reverse at some point in the next generation due to water issues.

The Great Lakes have a compact which protects the Great Lakes from being exploited. Lake levels have fallen one foot from the record levels of last year, and will continue to fall if the rain patterns persist. If the drought in the West continues, the Great Lakes region will be like OPEC; they will have access to the world's largest freshwater supply for use in agriculture, industry and homes, and will affect the growth of the country.

As to why AZ attracts so many Chicagoans, one Chicago person attracted another, and so forth. The cost of housing was cheaper than here in a big city that was warm, and the rest is history.

It's just interesting to me like people in IL just wake up one day and want to move out to Arizona. Like some weird alarm goes off in our head. We all either end up in Arizona or Florida, it seems haha.

It's just classic chain migration. A substantial number of people moved from here to Arizona and then many of their family, friends, and neighbors have gotten the idea and followed them. Lots of Illinoisians settled in South Orange County and the South Bay of LA before Arizona started to develop too.

With Chicago you get a sense of feeling “hemmed in” throughout the year, physically and mentally. Whether it’s sitting on the Eisenhower or maybe just longing for a backyard, or even just feeling despondent from how lockstep and unwavering the city is with its politics and regulations. The mayor is openly discriminating against white people, who likely serve as the city’s largest tax base.

In Phoenix you get at least some pockets of those who cherish freedoms and try to live colorblind lives. The wide open vistas of the Arizona desert inspire much Hope and renewal for the urban weary American.
OR.......politics has nothing to do with it and it's all the weather.

The last studies I saw on who is moving where from Illinois shows large portions are moving to Indiana, Wisconsin, and other midwest states with the same or worse weather.

Retirees have been moving to Florida or Arizona for many decades, but until the past 10 years there haven't been a major issue of population loss and even losing seats in the house of representatives. Until recently it has been balanced by people moving in.

It can't continue as it has, just look at what happened to the Chaco Canyon people.
