I live in Zionsville (NW Indy) because of their top-notch schools. The school district is continually in the top five in the state in various categories. High graduation rate. If you haven't been to Zionsville, give it a visit, it's lovely here and a short commute to Indy. Great place to raise a family.

Z-ville is great, but if you want small town/small school, check out New Palestine.

We moved from Charlotte, NC and decided on Brownsburg because of all the reasons you are looking above. It has a small town feel, has GREAT schools but we are still close enough to Indy to do stuff and we both work in Indy as well. Our daughter just started school yesterday and so far we are very pleased with the school!

Franklin Township on the Cities South Side has very good schools.
Lawrence Township if you stay in the Lawrence North ares is very good
Perry Township, has some good schools as well
All are college prep schools.
Avon area also has some good schools if you stay in Hendricks county schools
I suppose Zionsville has good schools as well. The township puts alot of money into them.
Indianapolis surrounding schools are pretty good. IPS has pockets of good and bad mostly because of lack of parental involvement and population.
