Non-student and will be looking at something close to entry level at least in pay for a while. What are some good options for me to look into as far as neighborhoods go? I'm quite young so ideally I would like to be around other young-ish folk (not necessarily college kids but that is fine too). Granted much of this is contingent on what sort of job I get but if you guys could point me in the right direction with some pros/cons of certain areas in Indy that would be great. I have absolutely 0 familiarity with the area as of now.

First part is not relevant.

I am moving to Indy because it seems to be quite cheap, is cold in the winter, not too far from bigger cities like Chicago, and I have friends at Purdue.

you could probably share a house with some college kids near Butler or IUPUI pretty cheaply. Check craigslist for shared rooms. I looked for short-term stuff a few months ago, and you could have a bedroom in a 3-bed house for $300-400 with either some college kids or young adults just out of college.

Thanks for the response.

1. Would it be hard to get to downtown and back daily from near IU or Butler with no car?

2. Would it be possible to find an apartment in the 500-600 range /mo in this area? (no roommates)

IUPUI is downtown.

Butler is about 5 miles from the center of downtown, but there is a decent bus system. See IndyGo | Home | Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation

I don't know about average apartment rentals closer to downtown. I know you can search different apartment finder websites to try to get a feel for that.

The reason i ask is if you came from a big city you might want to live in city. If you come from a small town then city might not be for you. You need to give needs and wants if you want advise. It is relevant for those of us wanting to help you.

Ah ok I grew up in a huge city so large concentrations of people dont concern me, I quite like it. I would like to live downtown or somewhere close.

Also look in the broad ripple area.

For 500-600 a month with no roommate, Downtown isn't really doable. I'd maybe look into buildings on the Near North side up Meridian Street or maybe in Irvington on the East Side.
