Moving to NYC from INDY-Need directions in a truck
The online directions say to take Lincoln Tunnel, but it appears the tunnel does not take trucks.
Can anyone give directions by chance? Thanks!

I just moved to Indy from Brooklyn (and i can't even begin to tell you how sad i am about it), so i can definitely help you with this one!!
I'm not sure what you read, but as long as your truck is less than 4 axels, you are fine. When I moved back here I rented a 12" truck from Penske and didn't have any problems going through the Holland Tunnel...and quite frankly I saw a few other trucks slightly larger than mine.
If you still feel uneasy about taking a truck through the tunnel, get on the Jersey Turnpike to 95 or the GW bridge (George Washington bridge)/cross bronx expwy. It's pretty far north, so when you enter Manhattan, you'll be up in Washington Heights, but can EASILY get onto either side of manhattan via the Henry Hudson Pkwy which becomes the west side hwy (which will take u to the west side of manhattan) or contine on 95 till you see harlem dr and go south which becomes FDR (which will you then be on the east side of manhattan).
i hope this helps. i highly recommend you take a long hard look at both a manhattan map AND a jersey/NY area map before the move. you have no time to look at maps especially with a truck, as traffic is very fast paced and the drivers are pretty cut-throat.

We came over the Verrazano through Staten Island, no problem, thats a great way to get to Queens or Brooklyn, too.

1BigBear,
Think about Columbus!!! Great place to live. Brown County nearby. Greenwood and Indy about 30-45 minutes drive. Louisville about 60 miles.

Greetings all!
Wow, it seems we (Brooklyn'ites) are all moving to Indianapolis! Let this be a warning to you Indians <g> to start locking your doors! ;-)
I, too, plan on renting a moving truck and hauling my stuff out there myself. While I doubt I'll make it as far as any tunnel (I'm a motorcyclist, and I suspect that a 20' truck handles differently ;-), I've been worried about getting literally stuck somewhere en route.
Does anyone know of a website, service, etc. that would tell/sell me truck safe directions to Indianapolis? I'm not just worried about NYC; in my last/only NYC <-> Indy car trip, I recall driving through some tunnels in some mountains near/in Ohio. I wouldn't want to get stuck there -- or anywhere else! -- either.
Thanks in advance, and 10-4 good buddies! ;-)
Cordially,
[Whatever my alias is here]

A longer way is to drive north from NYC to Albany and then take the NY thruway to Buffalo, down to Cleveland, to Columbus OH and then to Indy. I know it well having driven it 2X each year to visit parents north of Albany. No tunnels, well maintained, straight interstate all the way. Easy on and offs, etc. There are tolls but for a good hiway with good stops and reasonable gas, it cant be beat.
Oh and almost no hills of any kind. Pretty flat all along the way.
We took the roads thru Penn. once and it was up and down all the way. Much more difficult drive.
