I set my cruise control on 79 most of the way. I think you'd have to be doing 85 - 90 to get pulled over. I remember making the drive with my grandparents around 1980 when the speed limit was 55 and it took a day and a half to get to Denver lol!

I certainly remember the cars back then had the 55 mph in bold or italics on the speedometer. I got about 35mpg highway with cruise and econ mode with a 1984 Toyota car. No standard modern safety features like air bags or even motorized seat belts and low curb weight. Modern vehicles are safer, but we should be further along by now in terms of affordable electric vehicles of all types for the average consumer.

I would not fill up in KC, the gas stations along freeway are heavily targeted for opportunity crimes on tourists who are lost. Not even worth it to try getting off I-70 in KC, wait in car and call for help if it quits.

Plan your fill ups to hit the larger towns. Lawrence, Topeka, Junction City, Abilene, Salina, Russell, Hays, Colby, Limon CO...Feel free to get off highway and look at Junction City (easy to get lost) or anything westward, nothing much goes on...

Everything is closed in smaller towns. Rest stops are probably closed and there are a lot of crimes at rest stops along this stretch of road including trunk/car cleaned out of everything while someone is in bathroom at rest stops, murders....
