Isnt there a cafeteria on Kingston Pike thats supposed to be really good?

I saw a Whataburger also somewhere in Knoxville or in this area somewhere, I'll have to try and find it again.

I love all the local places, I heard yesterday that the town I am from had a lot of places shut down, Lonestar, Barnhills, Bennegans, Shells, Perkins and several more, economy just too bad for anyone to make it these days.

I think the Schlotzky's appended to the side of a gas station is still open here in Johnson City... never been in, though... in my experience any fast food coupled with petrol is very icky.

I prefer local restaurants, too. My absolute favorite Knoxville is Tomato Head. (For the record, here in Johnson City I like Red Pig BBQ, Taste Budz & Alta Cucina.)

I don't think there has ever been a Whataburger in the area. They are based out of Texas (Corpus Christi) and have been an institution out there for over 50 years. They have been expanding in recent years and the closest ones I know of are in Birmingham, AL. But if you ever go to Texas you'll see them everywhere. Or if you ask anyone who's from Texas, they'll tell you about their love for the chain. Probably the closest chain tastewise to Whataburger is Sonic (which is based in the same region. Sonic is based in Oklahoma).

Also, they are known for their big white and orange "A Frame" shaped roofs, so the colors themselves should make them a big hit here in Volunteer land You can read their history at Whataburger.

Only chain I'd like to see is Popeye's. I love their chicken and dirty rice. I stock up whenever I'm in Chattanooga, which is the closest one.
I wish someone would open an African/Ethiopian restaurant and also a good local diner.

There's a Popeyes in West Knox, the address is 615 Watt Road. At least that's what the Popeyes web site says. Maybe it's in one of those truck stops.

You're right about Whataburger, I was thinking of Backyard Burgers but there is a Whataburger in Ocala FL, it opened just before I moved from there a year ago, I really didnt care for it.

Yeah I've never been very impressed with Whataburger, either. They were all over Florida when I was a kid, and I used to think they were called "Water Burger" instead of Whataburger.

I do wish we had more Back Yard Burger restaurants in Knoxville.

Really???? Last time I checked their site, Chattanooga was the closest. I haven't been driving out that way much lately.
You have made me very, very happy. I know what I'm having for dinner!
Love that chicken from Popeyes

You, too? I always thought the same thing.

I like subs that are STUFFED!

I grew up with them.

When I lived in Orlando there was a great place that I went to and also in Bonita Springs, FL there was Stan's. His subs were legendary and also made the best soups. He actually made the best New England clam chowder that I have ever had.

When I was pregnant with Lauren I would walk a mile in the horrible heat to get them. When I had her I would put her in her stroller and walk down there, again. At that point, it was summer!

Every sub around here seems chintzy. I make them myself, now. But I can't seem to find a good sub roll. Anyone know where I can find that?

My wife is from Rhode Island and that is her number one complaint “there just are not any real bakeries around here”. When we go up there for a visit, I really don’t care for the bread at the bakeries there. I guess it’s what you grow up with.
