Really?

I'd rather be called "honey" than a lot of other things. Really.

Generally when someone I don't know calls me "honey" it's very condescending and is a situation where the woman is trying to place themselves above me in conversation. Yeah, if a girlfriend or my grandmother says that it's okay. A lot of it's in the tone too.

It depends on the person.

A few years ago, I'm not sure about the name of the book, but it was stated in that book that "bless your heart" was a way of insulting someone...I had never even thought that until I read that...I guess it depends on the person...when I say "bless your heart" it's because I'm showing sympathy...
It is about the person and the circumstance.

With both honey and bless your heart, it depends on the tone, and so much about physical cues. People in the South tend to use words like these, but like everyone everywhere else*, there are both nice people and not-nice people here.

*I'm starting to bang my head against the wall here. How many times have I written on this forum that there are both nice and mean people in the South just like everywhere else!?

Me, too.

Hey, Vol Dude, if I called you "honey" you'd like it!

So would I, as long as the intentions are good.

Yes, they would be good intentions.

I don't like being called "honey" in a condescending way, either, but when it is done with kind intent it is fine with me.

No one has ever said "bless your heart" to me in a condescending way either. In fact, I mentioned something about it in post #67.
