I'm a 49er and I actually grew up where this stadium now stands.

The 49ers built their $1.3 billion Santa Clara stadium without a direct public subsidy — though not without city help, and with potential risk if revenues fall short.

The Santa Clara Stadium Authority, a separate public agency, was created to shield city coffers from being used for stadium costs. Its members are the Santa Clara City Council. The authority is responsible for up to $950 million in construction loans, to be paid back from revenue generated by the stadium such as naming rights (it received a $154 million cut of a $220 million deal with Levi’s) and the sale of seat licenses, ranging from $2,000 to $250,000, for the right to buy 49ers season tickets.

The 49ers were responsible for any construction cost overruns on the 68,500-seat stadium.

The team’s annual rent is $24.5 million on a 40-year lease. (the 49ers basically pay 2.45 million for each game played at Levis!)

The NFL provided a $200 million loan.

Yes, it is typical that this becomes a public entity under a stadium authority. The reason is that stadiums tend to lose money and this shields private investors from the losses while at the same time guaranteeing their theoretical bonds. The exchange in that is the investors tend to get on the Stadium Authority boards.

While the Sands plan is 60% private, the recommendation from the committee is 71%. Sands wants 4/7 seats on the Authority board. The Committee says they will only have two. That is an issue that is likely to cause friction, even if Sands et al pony up the other $200 million.

If they get their stadium, I have no doubt they are coming here. Jones does not want them in Texas, and every single person I talked to in my 5 months in Oakland wouldn't pick up a penny in the road to give to the Raiders. They consider them traitors and losers to boot.

When people asked me where I was from and I said Vegas, I often heard " oh , I heard you guys are getting the Raiders. You can have them."

UNLV is mentioned in the Committee's recommendation draft as having the ability to use a similar plan to build their own stadium if the NFL deal falls through. They would need a $200 million down payment that includes the value of the land. The stadium would have to be on their campus.

Once you can impose a tax, it could be used for any project. Is the stadium the best use of this money? History suggests it isn't.

Also it may not be wise to make Las Vegas more expensive for tourists. After all, more and more states are legalizing gambling. Look what CT and RI legalizing gaming did to Atlantic City.

This info leaking out of the R-J doesn't help the stadium cause and furthers the point that the R-J has turned into garbage. This is a highly unethical use of media by an owner.

Sheldon Adelson used paper to feel out politicians on stadium
