When I did construction we used feet, inches, and 1/8ths.

With my fabrication tubing thickness is measured in decimals .090 for example. The length is feet. They come in sticks of 20 feet.
None of my fabrication costumers measure anything. I decide what needs made and measure myself.

Figure out that 12x.3 is 3.6. If that doesn't work 12x3=36. and move the decimal point. 3.6" .6" is slightly less than 5/8" and slightly more than 1/2" so 9/16" is close enough.

Of course, but in reality there is no such thing as 1.3 feet. Would you say 3 meters 6 inches?

When a bank charges you a fee, often it will come out to say $4.227643797. Of course they charge you $4.23. Multiply that by a trillion transactions, not a bad profit. Used to be that way don't know if it still is.

Not at all true. There are places that use decimal feet. Not everywhere but enough to have encountered it.

My favorite is always when my employer went metric. What really happened is we stayed perfectly English in our choice of parts but expressed the dimension in metric terms. It was still a 1/4 inch bolt but on the drawing it was 6.35mm. By now (20 some years later) they may actually use 6 mm bolt..but I doubt it. I suspect it is still easier to get a 6.35mm bolt in the US and your serviceman's socket will fit.

Yeah, but at least odometers use 10ths of a mile. I have yet to see a ruler with 10ths of an inch
