Montauk village feels and looks very different from the rest of the Hamptons. Much more middle class, very beachy.

I like all of them, but I can't stand the traffic getting there. I tend to take a weekday off during the summer to go to the Hamptons.

I have a question: I checked the income stats for the Hamptons on here: Mapping America ? Census Bureau 2005-9 American Community Survey - NYTimes.com, and none of the areas in the Hamptons stood out as being particularly wealthy. Why is that? Was it just that they picked a bad sample or that the very wealthy people have multiple residences, and they didn't list their address in the Hamptons?

Yes, you answered your own question: the uber-rich do not list their summer homes as their official Census residences.

Yes, that mostly, and also you would be suprised how many people who aren't wealthy live in Westhampton and Southampton.

Exactly. One person who makes 50 million and 9 house maids who make $30,000 means you have a median income of $30,000. It can be a bit misleading.

Lots of unwealthy "normal" people live in Sag Harbor too. It has quickly become the place to settle down in the area year round especially if you have a family. has changed the school quite a bit with a few famous families, and very wealthy families, nothing like it "used to be". East Hampton is a waste of time. ITs were the very rich or the want to be rich go to be scene and pretend to shop in the very expensive stores, the normal people in East Hampton live in Springs, which is in EH Town. Southampton is more old money and normal year rounders. These are the people you meet and talk with and then days later find out they are billionaires!!!
Hampton Bays, West Hampton and that direction are the clubbers!! They are the people that stay in a share house weekends and love to go out all dressed up and party like they are in the "Hamptons" but are not even close to the real Hamptons.

Sagaponack, Amagansett, Wainscott.... Wouldn't really call them a town, I guess technically, the only one close is Amagansett, but its small and really considered East Hampton, non of them have a strong community like the others...

Since 1 is a village (Sagaponack) and the other 2 are hamlets (Amagansett and Wainscott), I wouldn't call them a town either.

NYS Geographic Glossary and Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource, rev. 1 may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

why do most of the estates in Southampton and East Hampton have tennis courts?? Is that standerd for homes in the area. I would rather take out the tennis court and a nice garden area with a fire pit.
I mean, I've seen Howard Stern's estate and it is the most lovely home, but his has a bowling alley...why?
