I moved out of LI and love it. look everything is about where you are in life. 21 year old moving south might be the wrong move. Middle age secure in might be a great move. BUT THERE IS A WHOLE OTHER WORLD OUT THERE THAT IS REALLY NICE . LI IS NOT THE BEST IN EVERYTHING. All the reasons people say they stay for they don't enjoy because they are working all the time. The same people saying about the world renowned culture picks up there begale and coffee at the same place i did and they read the NY Post. Oh don't forget the 40,000 in credit cards and the 400.00 car payment so they can look the part of the renouned person Lol . people on LI are some of the hardest working people I have ever met.

Where else can you be at the beach within 15 mins and be so close to NYC all in the same time?! I'm not sure I would ever voluntarily move off Long Island.

And unless you are a teenager or college student, if you have a job, how often can you go?

Well... Back in the day I went three days a week after work to Cedar, every Saturday to Field 5 at RM and then Cedar again for Sunday breakfast. (hmmm, given the amount of sand in my eggs maybe you can eat beach).
But unless it makes you money, being near a beach factors very little into selling the Island as a place of good economic value.

FWIW I first heard the phrase from one of the top executives of UTC around 1985. I was driving him around the Island when they were trying to figure out how to attract top engineers to their facility on Duryea Rd.

The beach alone is not enough. You have to include girls in bikinis when trying to attract engineers to a beach neighborhood.

Actual women in such a state of undress would have either frightened them away or ruined them as engineers.

I am retiring from the NYPD in 10 days.We are moving to NC,South of Charlotte. For now my pension is gonna go a very, very looooong way.I have NOTHING BAD to say about L.I. just that it has become to expensive to live here. Many of my co workers are retiring and fleeing the Island for the same reason.NC,SC,GA have become the hot spots. There are two other familes on my block moving, one to Fl the other to NC again for the same reason. My cousin moved to Fl last year for the same reason. Her and her husband were fortunate enough to get transfer's and they fled.Never been happier and are not paying 13,000 a year in taxes.
