30+, unmarried, and living in an apartment in Hempstead... spewing generalizations and stereotypes as "knowledge". What experience could you possibly have to give others advice on where to live and raise a family?
If you can't sell an apartment you overpaid for, does it really matter? You talk about "plummeting" RE in other cities and conveniently forget how bad a loss you're sitting on and can't unload. Stones... glass houses.
Anyway - my point, which you chose to ignore in favor of replying about a minor detail, is that you don't have the credentials to be advising folks about relocating their family. If they want a "single, professional woman"'s POV (which let's be honest is code for a older woman who missed the window for having kids), sure - troll away in the NC and FL boards about how horrible other states are because you "visited"... But, do so knowing the truth. The truth that those of us who are raising a family and have LIVED on both LI and in these other states are exponentially more qualified to offer an opinion.

Missed the boat for having kids? Single? Lol I have a pretty nice rock on my finger so not sure what you're talking about and last time i checked this was a forum where anyone can say anything they want. I don't have to like any specific place just like you don't have like long island. And there is an ignore button if you don't like what I have to say.
Ps I went to school down south so its not just hearsay but whatever- done arguing with idiots.
If I did not have to be here for work related reasons, I would happily find somewhere else to live and find a better way to spend the thousands of dollars we pay in taxes.
I am in a position where I cannot afford to live here anymore. I've been here all my life, but it really is too expensive for me. I was looking at North and South Carolina, and I know from family who live, or have lived there, that it is much cheaper than here. Extremely high rent, coupled with LIPA is too much.
As someone who has moved from LI, I must say it isn't the same place I grew up in. My last visit, I really looked at the place objectively, and I noticed that a lot of people aren't happy. The place wears on you, taxes, traffic, the expense of everything, the pretentiousness of so many people. Look, there's things I miss about LI every single day, but I'm thinking it's more the LI of the 80's and 90's, not today. Hempstead turnpike looks more and more like Queens Blvd to me every visit.
Oh, and there are plenty of nice places to live besides there. Props to the poster who sais "strong people can live anywhere".
Eventually will probably leave. Can't see being retired here without a pension. For now, kids are doing well, I'm happy with the schools, have a job, and all family is here.
