The friends and family argument is the only factor that really matters. I lived in Suffolk and NYC was most certainly not a faraway land. Besides commuting there every week day, I have friends who live not only in Manhattan (spent the night on their couch often after a fun night out), but also in other boroughs. It's all great fun. Yet once you have kids, there's a paradigm shift... your wants of Broadway, food, culture, and stimulation are not exactly the same. You end up with dinner at home, play dates, sports, and camps - all occurring in and around your neighborhood and school. It's about vacations away beyond that. You'd understand this if you had kids, maybe you will one day. So just about everything pulls into this mini sub universe that is your neighborhood... and in that regard I will put my current local food, culture, and brain stimulation above what I had locally on LI. That's reality of "middle LI"... beyond the handful of really prime towns on LI, there's nothing special you can't find elsewhere except your family and the guy you knew since 2nd grade. Meanwhile, both parents work and their kids are in daycare most of their waking day. I don't think that's a way to raise a family... that's not how kids used to be raised on LI.

So the choice is made as a direct comparison to a town, not a broad geographic reference to LI as a whole. Compare raising a family in Ronkonkoma to Bumpkinville... and even at that, it's simple narcissism for a LIer who does live in a prime LI town to think there's no smart, successful, and innovative people anywhere else in the country. That's laughable.
are you saying the natives of charlotte don't need to have 2 working parents to love comfortably? I've heard stories of friends throughout the south having 2 income households

Just because I dont like it, but doesnt mean it would stop me from living somewhere a good job and living could be found. I grew up in central Pennsylvania with wayy longer winters than here.
You not being from LI is a distinct advantage to you...you understand the world's borders do not end at East River, LI Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Living in your parents' basement probably never held any appeal for you either. You did what most LIers won't - leave for a better life, greener pastures and opportunity.

True. The coal mining towns of Pennsylvania are not really career building areas. lol. And I would have no problem leaving LI tomo if needed, just as you did.

I can't speak for everyone, but we're a one income family and the vast majority of my wife's friends do not work. It seems to be a pattern where the 2nd income comes later as the kids get older. As far as LI, nobody I know there with kids lives on one income.

Let's stop right there. We all know anecdotes from someones's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate are rarely accurate.

Two incomes here. We live off of one and bank most of the other. It's really something to have a nice bank account without sacrificing much if anything.

Would you be in the same position if you went there without selling a LI home?

Didn't own a home on LI, we were renters. So this was all on our own, with a mortgage, and new cars.
