Hi All

Will be flying out of MacArthur Airport in April. Which is the better option on a Saturday morning coming down 95s: The New London to Orient Ferry or the Bridgeport to Port Jeff Ferry - OR - just scrap the whole ferry idea altogether.

Thanks!!

Skip the ferry, it really only makes sense if you're way out east to begin with or want to avoid the NYC area rush hour. On a Saturday morning you may as well just drive.

I disagree. I would take the Orient Point ferry to the Long Island Expressway to exit 62. Its a nice scenic ride and def. breaks up the trip. The drive around sucks and you gotta cross the bridges. You never know what headaches you can run into, no matter what time.

Agreed...it's at least $50 one way with passengers and does not save you a lot of time on a Sat.

Now then...if you want to take the ferry for scenic purposes (which there are many)...

The BP-Port Jeff ferry puts you on LI much closer to Macarthur (only about 20 mins away). The Orient point ferry is a much more scenic ride IMO...as the drive along the north shore is really nice.

Guess it depends on what you like??.....

New London, CT to MacArthur airport = 3 hours driving around.

Orient Point to MacArthur = 1 hour 15 minutes + a 1 hour 20 min. ferry ride. = 2 hours 35 minutes.

A big question is what time do you have to be at the airport by?

The first ferry out of New London on Saturday is 7:30 which will get you to Orient and off the ferry by 9-9:10, depending on the weather and # of vehicles on board. (Miss that ferry and the next one out is 9:15.) Add another 1.25 to 1.5 which will get you to the airport around 10:30ish.

The first ferry out of Bridgeport is 6:30 which will get you to Port Jeff and off the ferry by 7:50-8. (Miss that ferry and the next one out is 7:30.) Ass another 30-35 mins which will get you to the airport around 8:30ish.

My opinion: if you take the ferry and have concerns about a catching a plane, use the Bridgeport ferry.

New London is easier in that you're dealing with less of 95, but personally I would rather make up the time/speed on 95 to Bridgeport than get stuck behind a slowpoke leaving Orient heading to Islip. If I wasn't worrying about catching a plane, I would saw New London as it is a much prettier ride.

Thanks to all for the responses thus far. The flight is at 12:00pm, but I was planning on an early ferry, if we go that route.

My biggest concern is not the length of the drive (I can plan drive time) but the unknown factors such as traffic. I am looking at the ferry option, which with a full car load approaches $90, as more of a guaranteed arrival time rather than sweating it out in traffic somewhere.

If we just drive it, is the 95 - 695 - 295 - CIP - LIE the best route? I have experienced lots of congestion at various times of the day on the cross bronx - does this route avoid that?

My suggestion based on the drive is why don't you see if you can take a flight from JFK or Laguardia. It would be a straight drive down 95 into NYC instead of having to take a ferry or drive 95 and then head to macarthur airport.Usually flying out of JFK or LAG is also cheaper then macarthur.

When I go to Mass., I take the Orient ferry, expensive but makes the easy and advoid all the traffic. Plus its a great ride. It give my kids a break too when we drive to NH.

Actually he'd be better off taking the ferry. Reason being that he can avoid the city traffic depending on what time he leaves and gets to the city. Time wise, its not much of a difference.

Plus it would be a bit more relaxing.
