Actually, I meant IN Porter Ranch - as in - people sometimes have to shovel snow out of their driveways - I will try to find some links to articles that demonstrate this.

That depends on what you want to do.

There are a lot of minor peaks in the San Gabriels where the main draw is hiking. Mount Wilson has the observatory. Mt. Lowe, Mt. Waterman, and San Gabriel Peak are some other examples.

The Santa Monica Mountains bisect the city of Los Angeles, so I suppose they would be the closest to downtown L.A.

If you want to ski, Mt. Baldy is the closest, whereas Big Bear is further away, and Mammoth Mountain is very far from Los Angeles.

The highest elevation within the city of Los Angeles is the summit of Mt. Lukens, which is just over 5,000 ft.
