Like Granny in the old WB cartoons burning stacks of money in the fireplace?

Go for North Hollywood. It may be a little more gritty, but it's also more arty. It's a great place for young actors. I think if you were to choose Culver City you'd get tired of the driving long before your lease expires.

So we've decided on North Hollywood for all the aforementioned reasons. Which areas should we be looking at? Ideally we'd want rent to be 6-700 each between the three of us. Some places we're thinking are Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Studio City, Burbank... any others? We want to live in a safe area too, obviously, as mentioned.

Sony Studios is in Culver City. Many of the studios are spread out where all you can do is guess until you land a job.

I would center where your day job will be.

This is going to be our first time trying to get an apartment from across the country. I spoke briefly to a Realtor who said that it'd be pointless to try and search for an apartment more than a month before I want to leave, because we wouldn't be able to hold it down. What are your thoughts about that?

Also, besides craigslist and westsiderentals is there any other place you guys can recommend?

I really like padmapper.com, it pulls from multiple rental sites. You can specify the city, min/max price, and # of bedrooms and bathrooms just like any other site. Kinda like the dogpile of rental searching

Have you tried Craigslist? They have plenty of apartment deals available.

Los Angeles Housing/Apts For Rent

If that is not an option for you, a better one is AirBnB. It's a VERY popular and still growing method of moving and traveling. Basically, someone list a room in their apartment or house as a hotel. They clean it and fix it up real nice and you stay until the date you paid for it runs out. They offer cheaper rates than hotels and you get the personal feeling of being at home. It's being used across the country and the world! Check it out.

Don't believe this - there is not that big a difference between Weho and Hollywood - Hollywood has just as much upscale stuff, but also a little bit of 'grime' thrown in for good measure. This info is pretty irrelevent to the OP as I think both areas are a bit too expensive for what they are looking for and North Hollywood is the best choice, but for anyone using this as a reference... Hollywood is very nice - it's just a big city neighborhood with big city issues and not a yuppy paradise like West Hollywood.

You'll be glad you went to NoHo. You can always move in a year if you really want WeHo (but I think you'll understand the drive better once you're out here).

Studio City seems like the most central location for the least amount of money. I'd start there, if I were you.

Burbank is very nice and a short drive. You'll like it there, but it's more of a subarb and for some reason seems a bit more expensive to me (not nearly as expensive as WeHo though).
