I accepted a summer clerkship in Monterey Park and I've never been to L.A. before so I'm not familiar with the area. One of my friends lives in West Hollywood and another lives in Pasadena, so I was thinking about crashing with them. I don't have a car and just was curious how the public transit system works out there? I've lived in a few major cities and relied on public transit there (Chicago, Seattle, Portland), so I'm not afraid to explore on the bus. Is traveling from West Hollywood or Pasadena to Monterey Park doable? Thanks for the help!

monterey park is about 5 miles directly south of pasadena, so that should be the obvious first choice. there may or may not be direct bus access between those two cities though, you'll need to check on that. a bike would probably even work well. as for west hollywood, that would be quite a trek. not only are they not very close, you're probably looking at a multiple transfer situation.

LA Metro Gold Line (light rail) will get you close. It runs through Pasadena down to East LA. Southeast terminus is the Atlantic St station. Depending on where you work in MP, maybe you could use a bike/train combo.

Thanks! I'm still looking around for places, unfortunately the friend in West Hollywood will be more convenient for the time that I will be out there. I'm used to traveling 1.5 hrs or so on public transit, I just want to make sure that it's actually doable.
