Big increase in homeless population in Santa Monica.
Wonder if the Expo line might be part of the reason.

32% percent originally from out of state is pretty significant.

--

Among other things, the report indicates that many of the city's homeless residents are new to the area. Nearly 30 percent of those surveyed reported having been in Santa Monica less than a month, while 46 percent came to Santa Monica from other parts of LA and 32 percent are originally from out of state.

Gone are the days when a person could simply walk a few blocks to enjoy a few drinks at the Regal Beagle with Chrissy, Janet, and Jack. Now, simply walking a few blocks in SM can be a disturbing experience, since apparently stakeholders who pay property taxes have lesser rights than mentally deranged street vagabonds who behave as they please because they're a specially protected class of citizens.

When the Ropers moved out and that wild Mr. Furley moved in it all went to hell.

This article from December says crime has gone up 54% since the expo line opened !

"From May 20, when rail service began, to November 20, police logged 380 Part 1 crimes along the 1,000-foot radius of the Exposition Light Rail Line, an increase of 134 incidents -- or a 54 percent jump -- from the same time period in 2015, the data shows."

Theft and Similar Crimes Jump More Than 50 Percent Near Santa Monica Expo Line

That pretty much sums up what's going on in SM at the moment. It's insane. And to know that 30% of the homeless ain't even from California - it tells you that they set their eyes on SM to target the well to do there. It should be illegal to have these useless people be human trash in Santa Monica. But this won't affect property value.

yes and the city of SM coddles and enables the homeless. they should learn from BH which doesn't tolerate homelessness (and not surprisingly, the fancy area between SMB and sunset has virtually NO CRIME despite being steps away from major commerce and central location)

however, i think the crime in SM is also due to organized gangs, as video cameras north of SM have caught young men in hoods committing the breakins...

I get that homeless people are people too. Lots of non homeless people are horrible people too.
But it's pretty obvious when someone is bad news or a troublemaker. Unfortunately the homeless 'advocates' just view all the homeless the same . This is a dangerous mentality to have for public safety.

And how much of that crime might be prevented if SM (and L.A) wasn't so politically correct and worried about profiling people.

Unfortunately the bad guys take advantage of this liberal mentality.
Innocent people suffer.
