A realist? Please.

People who have neither been homeless nor talked to an unhoused individual often assume that vacancies are the result of “shelter resistance.”

But consider that many of these shelters limit the possessions a person can bring with them to one cubic foot. They must leave everything else on the street. The next day, they must line up again for a chance at a shelter bed, perhaps having lost most everything they owned the night before. They may have also been forced to abandon a pet and separate from someone they love simply to get one night of sleep indoors. In that light, a decision to refuse shelter seems much more reasonable.

When offered an alternative that is better than sleeping on the streets, most people do not require encouragement from a police officer.

To provide a better alternative, however, we have to ask unhoused people what they see as better. That needs to be done in a systematic way. Remarkably, no such information has ever been collected in Los Angeles County.

New York secretly ships their homeless to other states. Los Angeles is a popular destination.

You pretty much nailed it. In Sacramento a woman died in her wheelchair after sitting outside one of the few women's shelters for 3 days waiting for a bed. There are almost no shelters so homeless families try to sleep in their car in places where they won't be seen for fear of having CPS take their kids. When I did volunteer work in Reno most women refused to stay in shelters because they were assaulted or robbed.

Good grief. Just stop. All cities - that is as in : ALL CITIES - “ship” homeless to other cities and states. It’s been ongoing for years and years and years. In fact, the first program started over 100 years ago (yes really ... it’s called Traveler’s Aid) and is still helping people move to support.

If any of these programs were a path to dumping homeless elsewhere in any statistically significant numbers NYC wouldn’t continue to have the nation’s largest homeless population, nor would Boston, nor would Washington D.C. (which has the nation's highest per capita rate of homeless) or Honolulu, or Seattle, or Portland, or Phoenix, or Austin .... (etc.) ALL those cities have programs that “ship” homeless elsewhere ... yet they are the leaders in homeless population counts along with LA and SF (which cities also have programs shipping homeless out.)

If you don’t know squat about a topic, you aren’t required by any mandate to post just because you saw a headline somewhere. You can wait until you actually educate yourself first, or move on to something you have expertise in.

Stunning visual story in today's NY Times after reporters spent 3 months visiting homeless camps in the Oakland, CA area. The story is much the same in L.A. and other cities. The reporters then compared what they saw in CA with shanty towns in Mexico City.

Sobering stuff.

what does being a realist relate to what you posted? Are you guys running out of people to fight with so you bring up old quotes and hope to bait me? I've joined expat, exitus and many others who just don't want to argue anymore. You won hope that makes you as happy as you are defending the liberal laws that let people waste away on the streets. I'm just glad I'm moving away from this shethole called so cal.

It certainly is, and it's happening in places you wouldn't ordinarily expect - like Reno. For years people who were priced out of Northern California were advised to move to Reno because the rent was so much lower, well not so much anymore.
