-So if anything the Gold Line is the biggest disappointment.

Around 40,000 use the Green Line each day , the line was built to handle around 90,000 , like most lines North America.

Blue line gets around 80,000 , the line was built to handle 100,000

Gold Line gets 30,000 , it was deigned for 100,000, a few extensions will bring near its designed capacity.

Orange Line gets around 21,000 , and is over capacity by 5,000 so my friend who works in LA says. The might be converted to Light Rail sometime this decade , if demand continues to grow.

Red & Purple lines get around 160,000 , the lines were designed to handle 200,000 , a few more extensions like the Gold Line.

All and all ,LA Rapid Transit Lines get the average usage according to North America Standards , but you guys still need alot more. And you should start focusing on your regional rail aswell.

if Metro could assure riders that they could still escape from underground even after an 8 magnitude earthquake or stronger I think there'd be more riders

Number 69 on the list of things which would provide the most impact on increasing the number of riders.

What percent of the Metro tracks/lines/routes are underground?

Plenty of other places -- Tokyo, San Francisco, etc. -- have subways or underground tunnels and plenty of people still ride them. For that matter, lots of people still ride the Red Line; we're not in LA currently, but my husband was back there last week and said it was standing room only for his trip from DT to Hollywood. Once the subway actually goes farther west there will be plenty more people who will want to ride it. I'm sure some people will always be afraid to go on a subway for one reason or another, but that's true of any mode of transit (including cars.), and I don't think most people are going to base their decision to ride or not on that fear alone.

I've also heard that it's safer to be underground in a subway than up above in the case of an earthquake.

Makes riding the subway sound inviting.

Well, he much preferred a brief trip standing to spending three times as long sitting in a car, topped off with having paying for parking.

Let the earthquake hysteria calm down here.....remember in the 1989 Bay Area Earthquake it was an elevated FREEWAY that collapsed and KILLED people. The underground portions of BART were NOT harmed and nobody DIED.
