It's interesting that most responses are pointing to Pasadena. I offer a different neighborhood that is close to Pasadena, but has it's own personality, and that's Mt. Washington. It's just a little west of Pasadena, and from my point of view, offers more of what you desire than Pas. To me, Pasadena is gentrified, and if I'm not mistaken, that's what you are seeking to avoid. Mt. Washington is edgier, more individualistic, and definitely closer in proximity to the Latino culture. No way will you need to spend 3.5 million on a home in Mt. Washington, unless you want to have the nicest home on the hill. It's more modest than Pasadena, but woodsier and funkier.

And, a huge plus for L.A., it's easier to get into and out of. The traffic from the valley or downtown to Pasadena is consistently horrible.

Mount Washington has always been a nice neighborhood.

Hi I'm poor and rent a room with my son.
Id love to be able to own a million dollar home, that's great!
I've been all over los angeles and southern ca. I'm also very familiar with nyc.
And let me tell you, NOTHING WILL PASS OFF AS EAST COAST HERE.
If you think you're going to move somewhere in LA and have it mimick the east coast/nyc you're sadly mistaken.
You seem to be in denial.
This is california. Nothing will "pass" for something else.
With that being said, best wishes and welcome!

I'm a legitimate east coaster, or at least I was. I recommend Pasadena.

I really like the sound of Silver Lake. Anybody have anything to add about Silver Lake?
I don't think their are any Black people there.

Nothing will fit your perfect criteria here.
Why not live somewhere "close enuf" and then do your politics and wherever else, elsewhere?
I think youll get sick of it here and go back east faster than you can say NEW YORK. Your attitude is too picky. But Like I said, Best wishes! (hugs)
