I'm just curious....I'm coming up in less than 2 weeks. Flying into Portland at 5:30pm and driving directly to SW Harbor. Here are the abbreviated directions from Mapquest that I will plan on using and I was just curious what the average speed is I will be going? (sounds like one of those tricky school questions, but it's really not! Just trying to get an idea of how long it will take me to get there )

295 N to 95N to 395E to US 1A which becom ME 3E Stay STRAIGHT to go onto ME-102/ME-198. Continue to follow ME-102 then the directions to the Inn

Is 295 and 95 set at 65mph? (looks like I will be on those highways for the majority of the trip).

295 is 55 mph through Portland, but 5 minutes north it turns to 65 mph. (295 turns into 95..but follow the signs to 295 to Gardiner...it's shorter than staying on the Turnpike) It stays 65 until just outside Bangor...395 is 55 mph. Route 1A and 3 will be multiple speed limits varying from 25 to 55. Bottom line is you will probably be fine going 10 miles over, but might run into that cop who's having a slow night. I've had state cops tell me they only light up on guys going 18 over, but that's rare. This guy followed that up by saying he had someone stopped all day long. 10 miles over will not be a problem from my experience. You will see folks traveling 90 mph on the Interstate I guarantee. I travel up and down it daily and there is not the number of troopers out there that there used to be.

The easiest route (pronounced root in maine) is to just get on the turnpike
and head north and stay on course til you get to bangor- go to 1a towards ellsworth from the first exit in Bangor-(first bangor exit is connector to 1a) go straight thru ellsworth- stay in right hand lane-go thru all the lights -keep on same road- after you go thru trenton and approaching mdi (you will also see many road signs)
you will take a right- towards southwest harbor (straight will take you to bar-harbor) again- stay on same road- you will come to somesville (and a light) go straight and you will drive right to southwest harbor

Route 3 from Augusta would be shorter distance-wise...but I don't know about time-wise.

Thanks for all the replies! I had really hoped to fly into Bangor to avoid this drive, but the flights were more expensive..I'm coming up with 2 friends and we are so excited! I just love Maine and I hope to make Maine Lovers out of my 2 friends

By the way, how is the island pronounced...Desert or Dessert...?? Or a little of both?

Let's put it this way... it's only got one 's' in it.

Speed limits in the Turnpike seem to be posted only as suggestions for drivers, not as firm regulations.

Um, to a point. Just don't make the mistake coming up behind an unmarked cruiser doing nearly 100 in a 55 zone. I'm *still* paying for that one. (But not as much as I could have- it took 2 yrs for the insurance co. to catch on so I only got 1 yr. of higher rates instead of 3.)

Well, I won't have to worry about coming up behind an unmarked car going 100! I try to keep it at the max 8 over
Besides, it will be getting dark on our drive so I will have moose in the back of my head!!!
