Don't forget your gardens. Many food pantries will take the extras from your garden.

Does that include surplus apples? I mean, I certainly have plans for apples but the number of apple trees that I have been blessed with is way past my ability to preserve and use.

Maybe. It's easy to stop on the side of the road and pick a bushel of apples though. It's worth asking about.

One potato farmer just donated a bunch of 50# bags. That is a big blessing in many homes.

You betcha deah! More than once, while forging ahead in life, have I made good use of a big bag of potatoes. They are filling and can be prepared in so many ways.

Once I was at WalMart in Bangor, and there was an announcement over the PA that out in the parking lot were a few (tractor-trailer) trucks from The County, and they were selling #50 bags of potatoes for 50 cents each! I came home with 250 pounds of potatoes that night! I've been waiting for another such good deal, but I'm thinking that might have been my bargain-of-a-lifetime.

And yes- apples would be welcome at most pantries that have the capacity to take fresh produce, and perhaps even more so, because they keep better than a lot of other fruits and vegetables that are donated.

This time of year is a good time to bring this thread back. I know that the economy has been tough on most people, concerns about fuel and grocery prices are affecting many more people. A very nice person brought this thread back to my mind. If you are able to, and you would like to, please think to give a charitable contribution to a local food pantry or heating assistance program. Many elderly are living on Soc. Sec. alone. There has not been a rate increase in Soc. Sec. in a generation. Young families are struggling in a lot of homes. Bless you all and thanks.

Default returnables

Here at work we save all employee returnable bottles throughout the year and we "adopt" families from the Next Step Domestic Violence program and provide them Christmas gifts and food. This year we will be able to adopt three families. We shop for them and employees also bring gifts like hand knitted mittens and hats for the Christmas baskets. We really enjoy it and it's a painless way to contribute.

What a great idea!

At work, we give the cans and bottles to the Ark animal shelter. At christmas we get up a few hundred dollars for the local food pantry.
