Wishing everyone seasons greetings on this Solstice eve.

Tonight I will stand vigil, as Mother rebirths Sun,
praying and chanting and drumming
until the deed is done
and dawn comes once more
and opens the door
and the Wheel is turned for another year.

(part of my practice is to "go dark" with the sunset, as I down computers, turn off phones, unplug everything and spend the night doing my things by the light of a single oil lamp, sitting before the fire. I may be here on and off today, but will greet you all again on the morrow.)

I just got up off the floor. THAT is sooooooo funny.
Looks very much like some of the trees I saw here in Florida Last night.

I will be drumming down the sun on Saturday at 4:30 Pacific Time with my church community. We will assure its return at the dawn--until then "go into the darkness".

I used to go to a beautiful and mystical solstice celebration in the little town of Canterbury NH, that The Mens Wisdom Council put on for the communty. It was held out in the woods on what was once the "dancing ground" for the Shaker Community. As villagers arrived at dusk and trudged in silence through the snows, (a centering and meditative time of preparation) . The path was lit by luminaries formed out of blocks of ice, and led to the "dancing ground" where the men had gathered wood and logs for a huge bonfire. We gathered in generational rings around the fire stack and after honoring the directions, a light was passed from the men who called in the directions, to the ring of elders who passed the light around their ring and then into the ring of adults and then into the childrens ring...and then the bon fire was lighted. The flames reached a good 20 feet into the air. Each person then had an oppurtunity to dedicate themselves to new beginnings or to throw something from their past, that they didnt want to carry forward, on to the blaze . After the ceremony there was hot soup and home made breads to share. People wended their way back as the spirit moved them, some lingering to visit, others heading off thru the frozen woods to the warmth of their homes. It was truly wondrous. I would stand gazing into the blaze and in my mind see similar fires across NH and Maine and New England and widening to take in the wide world, like a necklace of fire--to honor the setting and rising of the sun.

Well, I'm off work for the next ten days! and I finally have gotten the Christmas spirit. (And soon into the Christmas spirits ) So I hope all of you lovely folks in Maine and all the wonderful folks who "want to be in Maine" have a terrific holiday.
