A 20 degree spread between Portsmouth and Manchester, a good example of the sea breeze at work.

Very heavy weather in the upper Allagash area. Telos, Chamberlain and Eagle lake area. Not a good night to be in a tent with aluminum poles. By "upper" I mean upper river which is at the south end of the Allagash. Every year a few novices go to Allagash Village to run the Allagash, only to discover that the river runs from south to north.

The Allagash River has had heavy rins every day this week. The river must e very high and people on the one week trip must have a hard time staying dry. There was a tremendous thunderstorm on Thursday and I would not want to be in a tent with aluminum poles in a thunderstorm. I hope somebody writes a narrative about this week on the river.

The flow is double its long term average and triple what it was last week. There are two take-outs to carry around Allagash Falls. The first one is a longer portage and the only one that is safe at this water stage. The second take-out may not be possible at this water stage. People on their first trip down the Allagash are in danger in this high water.

(Edited to add: The Saint John has also doubled in flow over the last few days. The Saint John is more remote, but is a safer river for a canoe trip.)

Done with this heat and it seems like its really just beginning for the year.
I want the summers we had 10 years ago. When you would wake up most mornings and need long sleeves or be cold...

It seems like the last few years we have had many days, even weeks in a row of it not really cooling off at night. I spent 20 years down south, and never got used to the heat and humidity.

It was 46 at sunrise this morning here at the lake. Mist rising off the water. 48 yesterday. Back in the 1940s, my parents vacationed on Great Pond in Belgrade the first week or two of August because it was cooler than July. Now we have one or two days each year that reach 90 degrees in Northern Maine. My son sent me a pic of his truck thermometer. It was 101 degrees in Portland on Saturday.

For those interested in real science, there is an awesome article by Ken Haapala, President, Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP). It is not a casual read. It requires thinking.

The Week That Was: 2019-07-06 (July 6, 2019)

I hope Cambium is well. He is not posting much on Maine weather.

This morning it is hazy and we can smell the smoke from the Canadian wildfires.
Earlier the news stated that not only Canadian forest fires were responsible, also fires in Alaska. It should get scoured out by the end of the week.
