On this day, 17 March in 1898:
The first practical submarine submerged on trials, in New York NY (for 1 hour 40 minutes)

Woo Hoo!

Should be a national holiday!

What makes that one more practical than the Hunley? On it's maiden run, it broke down and all the power died. The operators were trained to repair it by feel and it returned to the docks safely. It made several more runs before it was lost at sea in the midst of a battle. Is it disqualified because it was built by a bunch of rebels who dared try and form their own confederacy?

Personally I am in favour of the David series of subs.

But they were all destroyed during an enemy occupation of Charleston during the war of Northern Aggression.

Never heard of them. The Hunley was developed, proven, and put into service more than thirty years before the sub you mentioned. It wasn't sunk at harbor. It went down during a major sea battle you might have heard of--Hampton Roads.
