I think this mentality is the reason we have such a litigious culture. Someone else is always to blame.

Ah, now, let me think on this for a second.

There are people who don't like what they call "The Nanny State"?

Ah, well, now. Who is it that makes the rules? Who is it that runs the show...who are the "chief nannies?"

Oh, why! They are the legislators who work for....WHOM? ....who do the good folks in Augusta work for? Let's think about this for a second.......wait for it.......

WHY, THE FOLKS IN AUGUSTA, THE SO-CALLED "NANNY FOLKS", WORK FOR US, THE CITIZENS AND VOTERS IN THE STATE OF MAINE.

If you really don't like the way they do things, then you collectively have the ability to change things.

Oh, yeah. I forgot. It's hard work and easier to gripe than to work and lead to a better system.

Yeah, I tried the "vote them out" thing. Didn't work. I tried the "voice my opinion" thing. Didn't work. I wrote to my "representatives"...hmmmm...guess what? didn't work.

It takes more than one person. Where's everyone else?

Over here, standing in the short line with you.

I don't think that the people who have participated in this discussion need to automatically be assigned to the group of those who have done nothing. That's quite the pompous statement. I didn't realize that we needed to qualify our statements on this board with our credentials.

I guess to "gripe" is what's left to do when nothing else appears to work. It's either that or shut up, which is clearly not in my nature.

Chalk it up to "Cathartic Therapy 101." I started this thread because I hear a whole lot of folks griping about "nannyism" and I guess I consider this "research" on how many people really do feel that way. Truthfully, I thought I was just being a curmudgeon. I have discovered that I'm most decidedly not alone.

The comments section (now up to around 37 of them) of this one can attest to that. Of course, there are supporters (however few) and that said, we do have to be respectful of their opinions as well.

Default Flashing Lights for Pedestrians in Bangor

Keeping Pedestrians Safe - WABI TV5

Is it me? Am I just being a curmudgeon? Is no one teaching their children to carry a simple flashlight with them if they are out after dark now-a-days?

It's a lovely thought for Bangor to honor Maureen Waltz, don't get me wrong, but I now truly believe that Bangor is leading the march to a fully "Nannified" state. The lights are free to anyone - well, except to the following:

"Cigna, our health care provider, provided some of these to our employees earlier," says Palmer. "We approached them to make some more available and they've been more than willing to do that."

Thoughts anyone?

It sounds like a great program that can save lives....especially of children. Parents arent always there to watch or to remind kids and these lights are better than flash lights because they don't have to be held and once pinned on.....arent easily lost. Great Idea! I really dont see the problem or it having anything to do with Maine becoming a Nanny state.....to me it is about valuing and protecting children.

Thanks for "opining" Elston.
