Beullah, From my perspective, the best advice you've received is from Deborah Cadwell.
I'm from the west coast myself and moved here about four years ago... I hate it.... For many, many reasons.
I wish I could move back to the west, but I spent a lot of money getting here and with the jobs and economy the way it is, it would be suicide to move back now.
Don't buy into the maine fantasy, it's being sold to you by realtors and travel agents.
M y daughter moved from New England(western MASS) to Oakland. She hates it. TMI, she was conceived in Bar harbor, and she loves MDI, from the moment we took her there when she was 10. She says there is a significant difference from how easterners and westerners view food, humor, everything. But her fiancee is unlikely to be able to get a job in the film industry on the east coast even though he is from VT. So she'll be an east coast girl poorly transported to the west coast.
The people we bought our old house from lived in Bar harbor for almost 30 years. They moved to dusty little place 150 miles inland at the foot of the Sierra Madres. I can't imagine that they can be faring well.
7th generation.... To me, it seems most original mainers would rather not have any outsiders around, (except tourists) and often times are aloof and unwelcoming.
It's not my imagination, I've encountered it myself, and for no other reason than I was from another place. It's a constant theme of this forum.
While it may be a constant theme of this forum, I must say from personal experience that I have never experienced any hint of it from anyone around Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. Of course you could say that the population there has so many transplants, that I would never reach a real Mainer.

I don't see any dislike of non natives around here either. It's much more fun to tease, than to actually dislike.

Good point. The dry Maine humor is very subtle. Most folks from away just don't get it. Like Tim Sample said: "You're not going to get these jokes right off. But you have to be awful careful drivin' home." The more folks from away don't get it, the more we tease. Personally, I only dislike the arrogant, condescending, know-it-alls, be they local or from away. And even they are fun to mess with. Snipe hunting, anyone?
