I will be starting a job at Salisbury University in the fall. My husband, who will recieve his Ph.D. this semester, will be looking for research jobs (psychological, social science, cognitive science, etc.). He will most likely be looking for jobs in D.C., Bethesda, Baltimore, Philly, Annapolis, and areas in Deleware. Does anyone know of good places to live that would be between Salisbury and any of those areas to minizmize the commute for each of us? We also have a young son so we would evenutally need to live somewhere with a good school system.
Also, does anyone know of places doing the type of research that my husband does?

Salisbury is at least two and a half hours from Baltimore and DC, thats without traffic. The Bay Bridge that goes from Annapolis to the eastern shore can be awful, especially during commute times. Grasonville and Stephensville are right by the Bay Bridge. If you do try and find a place in between Salisbury and DC, you will be looking at a 2 hour commute and your husband could have double that if he works in DC. I dont know how familiar you are with central MD, but traffic is insane.

Living in Easton, you would have a 1 hr commute to SU and your husband would have 1-2 hrs to Baltimore and Annapolis. Easton is a beautiful city and a good proximity to the big cities of MD.

Dover, DE is about an hour and a half from Salisbury. Greenwood, Seaford, and Bridgeville between Salisbury and Dover and there isn't much traffic on Route 13.

I would suggest your husband look for a job on the Eastern Shore. I went to college at Salisbury University and ended up staying here after graduation. The home prices are a lot better than the rest of MD and more than a few cars at one stoplight is considered high traffic.

Salisbury is the biggest city on the Eastern Shore, which includes southern DE and the little part of VA. I would not suggest a commute to DC or Philly. Salisbury is quickly growing so maybe there are research opportunities around here.

I TOTALLY disagree about there not being much traffic on rte 13 in DE. You havent driven this road within the past 6 months have you? Between Delmar and Seaford there is construction and the typical summer traffic makes this road worse than many big city hwy roads. I just went from Salisbury to Seaford a few days ago and nearly went crazy since the majority of the ppl around here cant comprehend that slower traffic belongs in the right lane.

If you are driving from Salisbury to dc/Balto you will easily spend the difference in a mortgage payment in fuel. Everyone says how much cheaper new construction is on the shore but fail to realize that most jobs here dont pay as much. I recommend Easton since its almost in the middle. Considering the jobs that arent here in Salisbury your husband either wont be able to find a job in the area or if he does it will pay FAR less than nearly anywhere else. Good luck

Just to give some insight on the commute...

We live on the Eastern Shore, in a small town, not far from Easton. My husband works in Baltimore. It takes him on a good day, about an hour and 20 minutes. It has taken him as long as 3 hours to get home because of traffic.
The winter weather here (albeit, not a consistent thing) has caused his commute to become 6hours before!
I would absolutely not consider driving to DC or Baltimore from Salisbury on a daily basis.

I agree completely. I live in Salisbury and would never, ever consider a commute across the bridge. Heck, driving to Easton takes an hour, which is just too long, IMO.
