That used to be called "Fort Kempton" before they tore down the red brick barracks-looking public housing and replaced it with that stuff. It used to look really ghetto. Route 6 is Kempton Street in that part of the city. You don't have to go too far west of there before it transitions to well kept middle class single family homes in the West End.

Are they still kind of projects though?

The Street View that I posted is from 2012.

Here's the 2008 Street View: https://goo.gl/maps/1G7c8LjtJSWarDv98

I'm pretty sure they are. The building colors are a dead giveaway.

Yep. That's what they build after they rip down the brick barracks buildings. Hartford CT projects look almost identical so I'd guess there is some standard HUD design standard everyone uses when they tear down and replace. I think it's pretty attractive. I can't speak for elsewhere but the reconstructed projects in New Bedford all seem to remain pretty well kept. Much more of a sense of community. Big waiting list to move to that housing. Nobody wants their kid to do vandalism and get kicked out. Near as I can tell, it's successful. The war zones are the blocks of Section 8 triple decker tenement buildings like around Weld Square that kicked off this thread.

There are similar ones all over Boston too. I remember the press when that Kempton mess was torn down and replaced. I think they added in some new streets (or reconstructed part of the pre-project street grid) because police and emergency vehicles couldn't easily get to the interior of "the fort." Part of the reconstruction involved large scale gang raids to root out a long-entrenched gang. It may just be that I'm out of the area, but I don't hear as much about it anymore which I'd imagine is a good thing. Still very much a housing project, but it does look better.

That was indeed “Fort Kempton”.
