My ex's sister lives right around the corner on Myrtle (her husband's family has owned a MFH there for 40+ years), so we used to be there quite a bit and often after dark. It's definitely an area I didn't like, especially at night (though never any concerns during the day). I never liked when we had to park any sort of distance away from the home.

Scary. It seems like the younger generation is pretty trigger happy when it comes to shooting at cops.
Since when are 32 and 40-year-olds "the younger generation"?

It’s possible to be successful in the New Bedford public school system. With good parents, the elementary schools in the better neighborhoods won’t be fatal. In the higher grades, the students tend to self-segregate so the kids doing the harder academic track with sports can do OK. It’s not like the whole city is a war zone. If you are at one of the elementary schools that serves the projects, the odds are pretty grim.

I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but some people seem to be taking these seriously.

In all of the pictures, it just looks like people going about their business.

And whereas this crime is truly horrific, NB's murder rate is on on the lower side compared to the worst/biggest cities in New England:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/gener...ities-new.html

It's 3.2/100,000. That's high for Europe or Canada, but not the US.

The first woman is most likely just waiting for the bus since she is at a bus stop with bags.

If you follow the group of dudes around the car they just move to let the google car pass and go back talking.

The dude with the car is just opening his car...you would wait for the road to be empty before breaking into a car.

The last dude is just crossing the road.

You could take a pic of someone bent over a flower bed and title it "burying a body?"...Maybe...but what about just tending to flowers?

You’re looking at one year of data. 2017 was 8 murders. 2009 was 9 murders. There are years where it’s near the highest murder rate in the state. There are also a lot of 2 and 3 murder years. Weld Square has always been one of the violent crime pockets of the city. You’re not going to see that in Google street views. Like anywhere else, if you’re not in a gang or in the drugs & prostitution scene, it’s very unlikely that you’d get shot.

... everywhere else in MA.

My peer group's experience in Baltimore suggests it can A LOT worse despite their efforts to hole up in relatively 'gentrified' 'hoods (e.g., Fells Point, Fed Hill, Canton). I think your general sentiment holds true in most MA neighborhoods, but other urban areas of the U.S. present much higher risks to the general public.

Most of my contacts there, despite heavily romanticizing the city, bailed shortly after the Freddy Gray riots ... at that point they had been there the better part of a decade and nearly all had directly experienced some degree of crime - assaults, muggings, violent auto/bike theft, apt break ins, etc.

MA cities have their issues, but the misery is much more ... well, let's be honest here ... segregated.

Baltimore is one of the most dangerous cities not only in the US but the whole developed world. Not typical of even urban America. An exception by all means.
