Regardless of how many are unemployed, there is very little job creation here, and across the country millions are competing for the same positions. Especially in Michigan, job creation is key, there simply aren't new positions to fill the void...until then the 10% will go up.

I think the employment pool has also be deluded by some companies firing and then hiring back as part time , so they do not have to pay health & welfare and unemployment taxes. You are right , its a lack of actual job creation.
I wonder if any records out there on part time workers ? The reduced hours for many also contribute to personal income loss.

I have family members that work in health care, both are nurses. Similar situations are happening to them, their employers are implementing hiring freezes and only hiring per diem nurses that will not be eligible for any benefits, including 401k or pension.

I think across the board a large portion of employers will begin to hire only part time candidates with no perks...most likely as contractors. Not a good outlook so far this year.

If 10% in Michigan are unemployed, then 90% are employed and the wages in Michigan tend to be much higher than other states so most people are doing very well. The last big recession was in the late 70s and it didn't take all that long to pull out of it.
It's true that we're not at 30% unemployment yet, thank God. But I have to take exception to the statement that those who are employed are 'doing just great'. I am very grateful to have a job, but I'm only working part time and have to supplement that with freelancing work. Despite having a bachelor's degree, with two part time jobs (one of which is self employment) I still gross less than $20K a year and can't afford to repay my student loans on that. Of the people I know who are employed, many are only working part time and would prefer to work full time.

Its going to be a hard ride. Unemployment did not quite hit 25% during the Great Depression. Many neocons today are trying to rewrite history and say Roosevelt made the recovery take longer than it would have. This completely untrue. Hoover did nothing much like Bush saying that the recession was a hiccup was a minor thing that would work it self out. We started to recover before we went into ww2 and the war did finish the job. The news today was bad again. Caterpillar laid off 20k jobs, and many other businesses laid off today. The only so called bright spot today was that existing home sales rose, but this is false good news. Homes that have plummeted in value in Fla. and Cal. have been bought at low prices. This is not good times returning.

Actually Hoover tried to do something , ( cut back on the money supply ) , wrong move..... We had a growth spurt in 1937 , a downturn in 1938 again, but employment kept going up all along. That was what Roosevelt did right , look out for the little guy , the rich did not care , they had all the money.
When things get bad enough , the people will revolt , we are getting there.

It's really disappointing. I'm a Michigander, born & raised. All 4 of my children were born here. My husband's an automotive designer and has been laid off twice before and now is laid off again (he doesn't work for the Big 3, he's worked for Tier One & Tier Two suppliers). He is very good at what he does and but isn't the top paid at any company. He has 4 letters of recommendation. In the last two and a half weeks he's been laid off, he hasn't had a single call from a company in Michigan. He's had calls from Indianapolis, New York, New Jersey, Virginia.. but none in MI. It may be our only option to leave the state. It really makes me sad because I love my neighborhood, I love the schools our kids are in but if there's no jobs, what else can I do?

We are a fortunate family to have actually gotten our unemployment (which isn't a lot but it's something!), some families are having a hard time even getting that! The system was busy for 45 minutes in my husband's 1 hour call-in time! He finally got a line in with 15 minutes to go!

Michigan Works! Have you tried there? The other two times my dh was laid off, he got jobs from there. Twice he's gotten interviews from legitimate companies because they found his resume on there, not even because he applied!!

Trust me, if Driller is looking for good help, Michigan Works is not really the place to go. My boss went there looking for an employee and all he received were literally hundreds of resumes of guys who had worked 6 trucking jobs in the past 2 years. Almost all had awful resumes and you could tell by their track records a majority of them were fired for any variety of reasons. I'm sure there are some great people who are looking for work through the program, but it seemed a majority of them were dirtball-ish.

Over the years we have talked to Michigan Works. Finding someone with a clean criminal record, at that time was a problem. It may not be that way now.
