I reminded my younger son that he suffered "childhood asthma", in case they ever restart the draft. And my older son, I told him to claim "bone spurs". If you know what I mean. That was when it looked like we might get pulled into the Ukraine conflict for no reason.

I think it might be a different story if we got into a direct shooting war with an adversary like China or Iran, but that's going to be their decision. Right now the culture doesn't seem to place a high value on serving in the military despite all the Thank You's.

I told two grandsons who were interested in becoming Marines that I would disown AND disinherit them if they joined the service..they got the message...and that is a very sad state of affairs.

Now, this is the military forum and I would hope we are talking militarily and not idealogy. I would hope it comes down to why we fight which may be as simple as.....if you like the other guy's way of life, go join him. If you want to keep your way of life, fight him.
You can't separate strategic military goals, nor military philosophy from a country's ideology. The current ideology is driving both our country and military into the ground. Why do you think they can't get recruits?

This is nothing new. Back in the late 60's, early 70's when the draft started, young men didn't want to fight for their country either, for good reason. Why do people think the draft was started?! I'll leave it at there. But this is an issue that started in the 1960's when our culture was drastically changing. Things are still drastically changing and people want to preserve what they have, or try to.

The draft didn't start in the 60's, it started in 1940 with passage of the Selective Training and Service Act, and continued past the end of the war in Viet Nam.
