I'm curious to know a little bit more about how this is affecting the city of St. Paul. Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that the RNC added 50,000 people to St. Paul thru September. For anyone who lives in St. Paul, have you noticed a difference as far as people around, less parking spaces, increased revenues, etc? Do you find the effects of the RNC overall to be positive or negative to the city of St. Paul? I'm bringing this up from a social/economic standpoint so please try not to bring politics into this if at all possible.

They are just starting to get ready for the convention this week. I don't think it has impacted anything yet. We were just in St. Paul yesterday and there were plenty of parking spots available, more then normal I would say. We went to the Science museum and there were not all that many people there. Traffic was very light coming and going (around 4:00 and 6:00). Mid-August and it will be a different story. The Trib had an article last week or the week before about all the restaurants/bars/etc. that are totally booked out for private parties during the convention. If you want to go out to eat in Minneapolis or St. Paul then, you can pretty much forget getting into any of the nicer places.

Thus far my conclusion on the whole ordeal is this...we need to give all future presidential races the false impression that Minnesota is a swing state in order to stimulate the local economy

I think this is a great question, you asked, Slig. I also find it interesting so few responded.

I'm a St. Paulite really looking forward to the convention, though in response to your original question I haven't noticed any impact yet. I suspect the 50,000 figure pertains to the week of the convention itself. I wish I still worked downtown so I could be closer to the action.

The only thing that I have noticed so far is hundreds of people spamming craigslist about their homes for rent during the convention for ridiculous prices.

It was mostly people in St. Paul near the xcel center at first, but now more people have jumped on the bandwagon and you see ads like "1000 sq ft 2 bedroom single family home, just 50 miles from the convention in Buffalo, MN for the low price of only $5000/night".

Looking at normal rentals on there really sucks right now with the flood of RNC ads.

Are these people actually making deals?

Years ago when the Twin Cities hosted the Goodwill Games (I think that was it) people were renting their homes out for several thousand dollars/week. Yes, they do get rented for that when there isn't really any other choice. Hotels will be full and if you are staying for a week and have the money, a house is better then a hotel room. Not everyone will rent for that but a lot of people will.

This level of greed reminds me of the 419 scammers and the counterscammers working against them, taking the greedsters into doing ridiculous, stupid things like posing with "I am a retard" signs or other (such as this case: How To Trick an Online Scammer Into Carving a Computer Out of Wood).

Not that I'm suggesting doing something similar (as entertaining as it might be, there be lawyers hiding under rocks) but I wonder if craigslists adverts are archived. I know I would think twice about renting somewhere if with a little online digging I could see the property owner was such an arrogant mod cut.

On the news they're worried about an influx of prostitutes. LOL!
