Jessica Lange's house was no where near downtown. It is close to a mile from downtown on North 4th street--but just up the road from the house I grew up in .

As far as I was concerned it was downtown. And yes, I've driven by the house before. My friend's cousin went to school with one of her kids.

I'll take that as a yes. My friend had a house just off Greeley and Myrtle and I always felt we were in downtown. Maybe it's just the "big" city in me, but having to walk about five minutes and be in "downtown" felt like we were already there. Refresh my memory about Lange's house if I am wrong; I thought that it was generally in the same area.

No, Greeley and Myrtle is on the western side of town, Jessica Lange's house is on the north side of town. If you think either of those are in downtown, which is the east side of town, then you might as well say all of Stillwater is downtown.

That's me, East Side boy.

Honestly, when I can walk five minutes and be in downtown anywhere then I am downtown. But you are a native and of course small towns are far different than the big city here.

Meh, whatever. I concede to you since you are a native what constitutes "downtown" in Stillville.

BTW, merry Christmas.

You will easily be able to find people to run with, etc. Depending on where on Orleans though, you might want to look further for a place to live. North of 36 you will be fine. There are a couple apartment complexes south of 36 that aren't all that great.

White Bear Lake is nothing like Stillwater. You won't find the same mix of people, etc. there. It has a smallish downtown area but again, nothing like Stillwater.
Golfgal, thank you for your post. Because of it, I feel certain that I am making a right choice with Stillwater.

Stillwater sounds just wonderful! The townhouse I found is north of 36 and it is practically next to Sunrise Park. Benson and Lily Lake Parks are nearby so is Lakeview Hospital. It sounds like a good area.

It seems like most people do not rent in Stillwater because I couldn't find any reviews on any rentals in the whole Stillwater area. It shouldn't matter because I will be checking out rentals in the area soon.

Merry Christmas, BTW!

I am pretty familiar with Stillwater and honestly that would be very high on my list to raise a family when that comes up, as I've lived in St. Paul my whole life but would no longer want to raise my kids here.

The commute? I personally don't think it's that bad. Baring a huge snow storm, 36 moves relatively smoothly from Stillville to North St. Paul, IMO. Get to 61 though and it can get a bit congested heading west into 35E rush hour. I worked in Stillwater for a year (third shift) and would commute from there to St. Paul every morning after work and it was always smooth.

Taking into account your other info, I wouldn't really suggest Forest Lake; White Bear Lake might work for you, and they have a similar type of small downtown as Stillville. Woodbury? Maybe. I wouldn't be against living in Woodbury at all. It has a different type of feel than Stillville though as it is the fastest growing suburb in the state. Stillwater has a sort of far-enough-from-the-city feel to it, yet close enough, too (if that makes sense).

Also, talking politics or religion with anyone you don't know was inappropriate etiquette I always thought. There is a right time and place for everything.
That was a very interesting article; thanks for sharing with me, Govie. I knew Jessica Lange was from Minnesota but I didn't know she lived in Stillwater. I know many great people hail from MN, such as Judy Garland, Charles Lindbergh, Bob Dylan, Prince, Coen brothers, and many more.

Do you agree or disagree with her about changes going on in Stillwater? It seemed like a silly reason to sell the house to me.

Of course, talking politics or religion with anyone you don't know is always inappropriate etiquette but it is always the way to start conversation in most of Tennessee just like Minnesotans do about weather. It's just culture I guess. Don't worry! I won't do that with new people in Minnesota. LOL

You should be fine in that area, fairly new development for the most part. Stillwater doesn't have a lot of rental properties, it's more of a residential area but I wouldn't worry about that too much. That area isn't "typical" Stillwater. Stillwater is known for the older houses and quaint village feel but finding rentals in the heart of town isn't easy either.
