I think I opened a can of worms here, which I didn't mean to do. All 3 of these response post have good points and I'll just leave it at that. )

That's why I challenged your post, not that I think you don't have good intentions which I'm sure you do but please look with your own eyes and good sense. If there were so many bad people there you wouldn't know so many good ones.

Well, if no one gave 'em money, maybe they'd stop begging!!

The ancient profession of begging has made a fullscale comeback. Yes, the ones you see begging are pros, making a good living at it. Even in tightfisted areas, the minimum take is about $30/day. Around here they make as much as $100/day, and drive better cars than I do (in fact one day I got hit on by a beggar driving a BRAND NEW CAR). They're not homeless, either. Most live in Section 8 housing and claim some sort of disability. I've yet to see one that was actually disabled.

The genuine homeless people usually have more pride than that. (Yep, everything in California is fake... even the homeless people!) I've yet to see one begging.

Funny story.. there used to be a beggar who had a regular pitch** at the foot of the Burbank Blvd offramp in North Hollywood. One day I had my window down and happened to come to a stop next to him. He asked me for money. I said I didn't have any. (He was polite, so no need to be rude. Some of 'em are PUSHY.) He responded, "Do you need any?", reached into his pocket, and pulled out a handful of bills!

** a beggar's established location, where no other beggar is allowed to set up

Wow, that must be a first! I had a guy ask us for money and told him we didn't have any and he started screaming at us. It was kind of scary. Another guy had a sign that said " Why lied, I need a beer. I have seen people begging with children/babies with them. I think the police really got on them because the next day, same begger but no kids with them.

Yep, those are pros... some use the poor-me or my-poor-babies routine, some try to intimidate the mark, some sweet-talk you, and a very few are honest. (I once saw a guy with a sign that went something like "I'm begging because it pays better than ditchdigging" -- which is undoubtedly true!)

A friend here is a mathematician with a warped sense of humour... he dressed up as a bum with a sign that read "Will solve partial differential equations for food", got his picture taken in that getup, and used it as a business card!!

I used to love my town, but be advised it's being colonized by the amateur social engineers now.
Ever since we were invaded by the socialist New Party about 12 years ago, the place has turned nasty and hateful towards Christians and Jews.
Most of these bigots oozed here from California, where they'd ruined their own leftist state and figured it was time to spread the misery. It's a source of great sadness to me. This once was one of the last strongholds of American liberty.

I'd wondered why Minnesota had lost its mind in the past few years. Appears it was also due to the New Party invasion. They had quite a list of recent successes in Missoula, too (over a dozen NP candidates, tho they usually run as Democrats).

And check out the list of New Party victories from 1996 (this is an archive taken directly from their website):

October 1996 Update
Illinois: Three NP-members won Democratic primaries last
Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election
day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State
Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary).
We've Been Warned....
