Mizzou used to be a competitive state in presidential election years. What happened?

Mizzou is not a nickname for the state of Missouri, only the university.

To answer your post: From what I have seen, growth in Missouri has been occuring chiefly in the more rural, conservative parts of the state. Voting percentages have remained generally stagnant over the years precinct by precinct, but some precincts are growing faster than others, particularly in and around the Springfield area.

A lof of Ds were elected or reelected to state offices however.

There's a growing divide in this country, especially among the more southern states where racism is more prevalent.

Well that's a harsh over-generalization.

I'd say there is a growing divide between Republicans and Democrats and how they relate to each other, or view competing ideas which is pretty unfortunate. Missouri has moved further right in the political spectrum, but historically it's been a pretty divided state...with left leaning supporters often having some fairly conservative ideas.

Well since Missouri as a whole is a midwestern state, nice off topic post. An ignorant post too by the way.

I would say that Missouri "Competitiveness" depends on the type of Democrat running. If Bill Clinton was running I think that Missouri would be a Blue state for that election. This is the same reason that Jay Nixon won the governor race. Centrist Democrats have a good shot in our state and usually get enough backing in the rural areas to come out the winner. I am somewhere between Conservative and Libertarian and I voted for Nixon.

At the local level, Democrats still win pretty regularly, at least in the bootheel.

I take it you don't live in, or know anything about, Missouri?

I don't think Missouri has gotten more conservative. Not at all.
The national dems have gone way too far to the left for many people's taste.

I would say that it's because people are smarter in Missouri than the blue states-as long as Missouri stays blue I will remain a lifelong resident-if, God forbid, it ever goes blue, I'm moving across the state line to Kansas.

lol. Well I hope you will have your bags packed if a centrist Democrat from the south or great plains is nominated for president because Missouri will likely be a blue state during that election cycle.
