Robert Clark was arraigned before Justice John S. Bicknell this morning on a charge of assaulting Arthur Sims with a scythe blade, with intent to kill. He entered a plea of not guilty to the charge, and gave bond for $500. He is to appear for examination on September 29.

The man who gave himself up to the police of St. Louis as "George Taylor," slayer of the Meeks family in northwest Missouri in 1894, is not the murderer.
When the man was questioned he said he was Virgil Melson. A neighbor later identified him as Melson.

Elias Stone, 60 years old, was found unconscious by the roadside two miles north of Excelsior Springs. He has a gash on his head, and it is thought he was attacked by robbers some days ago and has been wandering about the country since.

SIXTY DAYS IN JAIL

Clarence Schreckengaust, the young man arrested in Jasper last week for stealing a horse blanket and whip from William Ale last January was brought up from Carthage Friday, and when brought before Justice Dodd he plead guilty and the justice gave him 60 days in the county jail. He was taken back to Carthage and is now serving out his sentence.

Last Friday about noon, Floral Hall at the fair grounds was discovered to be on fire and was entirely consumed.
There was no insurance and the loss is complete. It is believed that tramps may have caused the fire.

Columbia.-- Misses Irma Hellmann and Hildegard Waugh, both of St. Louis, were studying for their finals Saturday night, when they heard suspicious sounds in the hallway of the second floor of their boarding house at No. 1111 University avenue.
As they opened the door they saw a man enter the front room. They grabbed the doorknob and screamed for help, thinking to trap the burglar. But they lost their courage and ran downstairs, the man escaped.

RICH YOUNG MAN TO PRISON

Galen E. Bishop was sent to the penitentiary from St. Joseph for two years on a plea of guilty to the charge of forgery in the third degree.
He is a son of the late Dr. Galen E. Bishop, who established the first medical college in St. Joseph. The young man has an inheritance of about $50,000.





May 7, 1930

William R. Mayhew, 48 years old, a Cape Girardeau traveling salesman, was found in his automobile on Highway 61 with a serious gunshot wound to the head.
He had been carrying a large sum of money representing collections for the St. Louis wholesale house. The money is missing.

Coffeyville, Kan., Dec. 18-- As a result of the intense feeling engendered by the building of the pipeline of the Kansas natural gas company for the purpose of piping gas out of the state, four different points in the partially completed line were blown up with dynamite by a party of fifteen or more masked and otherwise disguised men, near Liberty, ten miles north of this city last night.
