Filmed in Italian, specifically the Bergamo dialect, and using rural folk rather than actors. A pastoral film that follows the lives of 4 families of tenant farmers or sharecroppers in northern Italy around the turn of the century.
This film is poignant and beautiful in every way a film possibly can be -- visually, artistically, spiritually.
For 20 years or more I'd have an unequivocal answer to that question: Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show. It had everything: a powerful story, superb acting, and a director sensitive to American social history. I think what also appealed to me was its B&W revisionist sadness.
I still love the movie, but these days I'm not so enamored by sad, socially conscious movies. To me now, picking a movie that embodies perfection at all levels, I'd have to go with The Searchers.
