I think it basically comes down to a lack of maturity in those that use it. they are trying to sound "cool." I can see white people using it in an attempt to sound cool in a non-racist manor. but someone like myself (that knows that there is nothing cool about himself) couldn't get away with using it in a non-racist manor.
i see what you're saying with immature white people using it to sound cool. depending on where they live, they'll quickly learn it's not cool. you truly have to live in a bubble as a white person to think it's ok with saying it, even if you don't use it in a racist way. but when an adult uses it, it simply stops becoming non-racist. at best, it's ignorant, but like i said....bubble for that to be the case.
Returning to the thread, I don't think this assault was racist. People have been stealing, robbing from one another since the days of cavemen. This perp after assaulting this victim viciously in front of one of her children proceeded to throw her down a flight of stairs possibly causing her death and he didn't care one bit and left her there. With that being said it would have been nice to see this assault stopped by a guy like Rambo emerging from upstairs and ridding society of a violent felon. My view is this is a case where they should throw away the key and let him rot in jail for the rest of his life. In a civilized society I don't want to see another person subjected to this scumbags ruthless acts on society. Call me mean, unfair, nuts, I don't really care. For some reason I don't think i'm alone with my thoughts. Without this video this jerk might be out there NOW doing this to someone else.
good job! i agree with you. bottom line is, the video is what created the outrage. i would argue that most of the outrage stems from it being a "mom" and the child being present. if it was a home invasion and he assaulted a woman and it was on video, we might have had some outrage but i bet not as much. so it's not racism, it's parentism. seriously though - without the video, none of us would have been talking about this at all. it would have made print news, everyone would go on with their lives, and he may be roaming the streets still.

They probably caught him fast because there was a video of him. That really helped the police, I'm sure.
I'm not going to pretend to understand the reasons that many African americans use the word, because i'm not african american. some have said they "reclaimed" the word. others say it's a double standard. if you think it's offensive in the way that African Americans use it, maybe you're right. the fact is, it's never not offensive when a white person uses it - is there any question about that?
This is true. My husband hates the word, and finds it offensive no matter who uses it. However, what many white people who call it a double standard fail to realize is, that when a black person calls his friend a the "N" word with the "a" at the end, it's not out of malice. I don't agree with it, but it is NOT out of malice, as in the "you people are 2nd class" meaning. When a white person uses it, it ends in "er", and it is anything but a term of endearment. I don't see double standard. I see African Americans very confused about what they want that word to be. They should HATE it, and never use it again. You can't reclaim a word that has origins in hate. I hope African American leaders can come together and encourage the end of this filthy word.

That word is so written/entrenched into our music and movies. I just watched Django and they couldn't work that word in enough during the movie. I don't know how we can move forward as a culture when it comes to a word that is such a smear against an ethic group and yet it survives in all aspects of our pop culture. I always wonder if the Germans used an equally offensive term to describe the Jews during the Holocaust and if the Jews greet each other with this word? The term is offensive and shouldn't be embraced in our pop culture. By doing so makes it certain that the word survives.

This sad reality is exactly why we are strict about what our kids listen to & watch on TV. Most of it is educational.
I did show them the video of the assault after warning them. They were angry, and all said this looked like a drug addict who didn't expect anyone to be home. They cheered when I told them they caught the monster.
Yes, even my 10 yr old knows how a drug addict may act. We have meth heads on our block. We let our kids know that addicts & drunks are unpredictable, dangerous, and if our kids should see them approaching, come inside ASAP.
So glad they got this guy - ex con with a rap sheet of 12+ felony convictions dating to the 90's? I wish I could say I'm surprised. Glad he's off the streets.
