In an effort to add some objective information to the discussion (all info from city-data)
Crime index (higher is more crime) US Average 323.2
Jersey City: 509.0
Elizabeth: 432.6
Paterson: 480.0
Linden: 271.1
Irvington: 973.6 (not a typo)
Union City: 294.3
And finally:
Newark: 590.8
So, by going off of this data, only Irvington is "more" than Newark, with Jersey and Paterson being in the ballpark, followed by Elizabeth, Union City and Linden in this order.
So in this collection of towns, it looks as though Linden is the safest, although in this company that is all relative.
All of these cities are where people are constantly trying to build "affordable and low income housing" so of course there is going to be alot of crime. What boggles my mind is when they tear down a project or vacant drug houses, they build these quick out of place looking townhomes with a million steps, and then they let the same element move back in with their vouchers. What the hell is the point, you got rid of one eyesore but yet you are allowing the same people to move back in hoping they'll take care of the property better this time.

WOW, 973.6, Lmao, I guess I shouldn't be laughing this is a serious situation. That is ridiculous, it's almost as bad as combining Linden, Union City, and Paterson altogether.
No way would I compare Cleveland and Cincy. It's like comparing Detroit and Nashville.
. . . and who needs the FBI uniformed crime reports (you know, actual facts) when you have prejudice and innuendo. It doesn't matter that Linden is actually safer than Montclair - we'll just pretend that it isn't because the housing type is different and a different class of people live there. And who cares that Union City is only negligibly more dangerous than Hoboken - it's full of Cubans so let's avoid it like the plague.
I really can't figure out why there are so many people on this board who are so obsessed with urban crime . . . as if they're actually considering living in one of these places. Of you listen to them you'd think that people get beaten and killed for simply being in the wrong place at the right time. People that actually live in these places know that unless you hang around with scumbags or regularly argue with them that you have a tiny chance of being the victim of violent crime. The fact is that it's generally the same idiots who are the victims of violent crime on multiple occasions and they're also the perps when it's their turn to get even.
That's what I'm trying to get to the bottom of because when some people see minorities they assume a neighborhood is bad when some of them my not really be that bad. I have never personally been to any of these areas that's why I'm asking. I have been to Newark before though.
I KNOW that many people will disagree, but this is how I PERSONALLY would rank NJ's urban cities (the ones I've visited; from worst to best) based on what I've seen.
1.) Camden
2.) Irvington
3.) Newark
4.) East Orange
5.) Trenton
6.) Jersey City
7.) Paterson
8.) Elizabeth
9.) Passaic
10.) Union City
11.) Perth Amboy
12.) West New York
13.) New Brunswick
14.) Hoboken

New Brunswick really, I didn't think it was bad there.
I forgot to put West New York on here to. That is another town I hear mixed things about.
