OTJ guys: do you feel that layoffs are inevitable now? according to the info, there's still a $2 billion+ hole even with Bloomberg's spending cuts and new sales taxes...
Mayor Bloomberg's bad-news budget tries to plug a $4 billion hole with less than $2 billion worth of spending cuts and new sales taxes - and counts on unions, Albany, and the federal government to come up with the rest.
The mayor's budget counts on city workers paying 10% toward the cost of their health benefits, raising $350 million, as well as $200 million more from reining in health costs.
While municipal unions have begun discussions with Bloomberg's labor team, it is unclear whether any such agreement can be reached.
from what I understand it's going to be partially up to the municipal Unions to make up the rest of that $2 billion+...so what happens if the Union decides against paying 10% toward health benefits or can't come to an agreement to reduce expenditures? I saw the press conference, and Bloomberg said if the Unions don't cooperate there will be severe layoffs everywhere, way more than the 23,000 already proposed...would the Union take a short term hit (layoffs) and sacrifice the most junior guys if it meant not changing what we already have?
or will the economics of everything make layoffs impossible to avoid no matter what?

Everyone should keep in mind that everything presented today is dependent on the state and feds kicking in some cash to the city....reminds of the old newspaper headline from the 70's "FORD TO CITY....DROP DEAD"....don't want to see "OBAMA TO CITY...DROP DEAD"
face it new guys we got on this job and workforce 20 years to late.. technology and greedy people are killing jobs...nd id rather get laid off then have the union give into there demands ten percent healthcare....
on another note i love how wall street gave up 18 billion in bonous money this year.. 6th highest all time ...rite after a bail out plan and rite after they have costed the city billions in 457's nd pension plans.. between the scams and the greed i love how we end up paying for it...first a bailout on our tax dollars then a nice bonous check for there great work...
