A black American is better off moving to a developing nation like Dominican Republic or Trinidad and Tobago vs moving to Mississippi or Alabama.

In fact the movement of blacks from Chicago, LA or Detroit is even bigger than from NYC, because there is little offsetting black immigration. And when blacks move its generally to the more dynamic states like TX, GA, NC, and FL. Problems is that the job markets in those places are more brittle than in NYC and pay often lower. It also turns out that the decrease in living costs less dramatic than people thought.

Its Lashawn running to hide, or a retiree who will return to places like Alabama or SC.

Not too sure about that. Have you visited these islands to see how the middle class live? I know loads of middle class folks from the Caribbean who see the USA only to visit, shop or maybe procure advanced healthcare services, but will never want to live here.

Now how many middle class people live in the Caribbean in little tin roof shacks? In fact even the poor in places like Barbados live better than this.

Go to the Caribbean and don't limit yourself to the people trying to sell you stuff on the beaches. Even they aren't necessarily worse off than are the poor in the USA.

Once you exit your bubble you will find that life for the poor in the USA isn't that good. LESS likely to access basic healthcare and decent education than are the middle classes, and even some of the poor, in those places.

He would not have been allowed in. Those countries tend to despise the poor from wealthy nations and think that they have enough of their own poor and criminals to deal with. Even backpackers are sometimes shabbily treated by immigration authorities in those places.

He will be asked to furnish proof that he can fund his vacation and will be hustled back on the plane the minute that he cannot.

Nurses and teachers qualify as middle class and they are a whole lot of black ones here.

Blacks (immigrant or not) heading South are often disappointed at how limited the job options are and how low the pay is. In fact you yourself have mentioned this when others were singing that life in the South is bliss. The cousins down there aren't about to support an ex NYer who cannot find a living wage job.

NYC will always have a more dynamic economy than other places, even during a recession. Its just that most middle class blacks lack ladders of access to these opportunities so are being forced out of the city. A civil service wage can carry someone only so far when all goods and services are priced for the Bernie Sanders loving hipsters with their $3k studios and $20 coffees, and $50 organic, gluten free veggies. The mid level back office jobs in the financial services sector have now been moved out of NYC, lucky for those whose jobs only transferred over to Jersey City. Hospital jobs are also getting tight.
It really depends on the Black person moving South and what their ties are to the community and the family there. It also depends on whether their family still owned property, and on various other factors. Someone's retired parent may have died and they may have inherited the parent's house.

Lots of Black returnees have been back in the South for 20 or 30 years and that's just that. People move on.

Of course a person from Mississippi is a US citizen, and doesn't have to deal with immigration to work, do business, or study in another state. No passport or visa is needed.
