The MTA should have smooth benches on all trains. Not everyone weighs the same. Everyone has a different body composition. Just because someone doesn't fit in one of those bucket seats and spills over a bit into the other seat doesn't mean they are not entitled to sit their. If half a seat if empty, why in the world are you going to squeeze in? If you are disabled, old or pregnant that politely ask if you can have a seat. If you are none of the latter, then suck it up. Why are you going to make the people sitting uncomfortable by squishing in.
I love when there's clearly not enough space and some entitled middle aged woman comes along and briskly motions to sit and then acts upset when you can't smush any closer to the pole and she has no shoulder room
I was on the train once as I watched a very large woman, over 400 pounds, walk over and just plop down---no excuse me, nothing---into a space should couldn't actually fit into. As she practically sat on the one guy's lap, as soon as she squeezed in the entire row of people (who were looking the other way) were suddenly pushed over and one went completely sideways and into the pole. (The middle pole that splits the bench so 3-4 people fit on each side of it.) She could've just asked and they probably would've gotten up so she could sit down.

What in the world are you talking about? #1 the newest subway cars already have "smooth benches". #2 Any of them that don't are old cars, and retrofitting them and wasting money when the current seats are just fine makes no sense. If they're too fat to sit in the seat, maybe they should lose weight. I haven't sat down on the subway in years because it is usually crowded, and somehow I've survived. Imagine that.

What about a skinny person who takes up 3 seats by spreading out and putting their bags on the seat
Completely different argument. The difference here is that you can tell/ask that skinny person to close their legs or move their bags. Can you tell/ask a fat person to move their fat?
