Those who live on SI, especially those that go back decades know the drill.
Property taxes on homes in NYC are comparatively low, but pubic school system leaves much to be desired.
Then there is fact spending nearly $600k or more doesn't get you much on SI, you're still living in a house with not much property attached. Yes, if you can find an older home in certain parts of the Rock, that could be different.
OTOH large swaths of NJ are like what SI used to be before that GD bridge and rampant over development took over.
You can find a nice house on decent sized lot with 1/2 or more acre of land. Large enough for a pool, space for your kids to play, events in back yard parties, bbqs, etc....
Yeah, people from Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn who have lived in apartments all their lives think much of SI is grand. Which is why they pay huge sums for what they get, and native Staten Islanders are happy to let them have at it.
Hey. I was just making fun of AB. I own property in NYC. I know how expensive it is for how little you get.
Between our property tax and city taxes we pay over $15K a year. Schools and hospitals are crap.
We also plan to leave.
Bought land and intend to start building soon.
The neighborhood we are moving to, the schools are rated 9 and 10/10.
It is pristine clean. Lots are at minimum half acre.
Neighbors are civilized. Crime is virtually non existent. And voters lean conservative/republican.
But I pay less taxes too, which is relevant to your comment that people outside of NYC pay more. We all don’t. And those who do are usually happy to for the benefits provided in return. Aka, no trash.
Your utilities cost far more as well.
Majority do pay more. Especially on LI. Go on their forum its one of their biggest complaints. Westchester pays even more than they do.

Mayor Eric Adams speculated this week that parents who’ve ditched the city and its public schools are likely to return as soon as Gotham gathers itself."
Adams and city are deluding themselves. Covid may have played some role in parents fleeing and taking their kids, but cannot discount eight years of BdeB and his race/class baiting policies implemented by that some kind of piece of chancellor Richard Carranza for piling on.
Good farming yields a healthy harvest.
Bad Farming yields....................well.................... ......bad nuts, fruits and vegetables.

I understand why he is so happy with the move.
Best Wishes.
The only hope for America to get over this bad stomach ache is to lean Conservative.
Getting back to God ,Family and Country .............simple for many ,difficult for some.

I can't figure why anyone would move to Long Island. It never made sense to me. You're putting NYC in between you and the rest of the world. I don't even like going there temporarily.

You do realize that $10K in property taxes on a 700sq ft condo (under $1MM cost) in NYC is pretty much the norm now? You're not much better off with comparable coops where the lowest maintenance is about $1K/month (at least half that is property taxes)
Yes, there are $5MM Brownstones that pay $6K/yr but that's not the norm in most of the city.
The only people who think NYC property taxes are THAT much cheaper are those who either pay none at all or pay under some subsidized program where their perspective is skewed.

Exactly.
Any decent house on Staten Island is paying close to $10,000 nowadays, and those within are paying the city income tax on their salaries as well. All while getting very little in return for all those taxes.
Can't even send your kids to the schools unless you're willing to risk their future success and immediate physical safety, especially if they look like mine.
I thought it’s the norm. Once you have kids you pack up and leave to better schools and better homes.
Which is happening as it has for decades, well at least for white middle class families. Unless one or both parents have jobs with city that require they live within limits, many can and do pack up and move to Jersey, Westchester, Connecticut or Long Island.
On other side of things as stated in this and other threads Asians are moving big time into solid once mostly if not all white areas with good to great schools. Flushing and other parts of Queens tipped the flipped years ago, now they're onto Bayridge, Bensonhurst, and many areas of Staten Island south of the SIE or certain areas north.
