I agree with you that people who nickle and dime on a bill tend to be petty or annoying in other ways too. Ugh and the cheap tippers Thankfully, most of my friends are laid back about splitting bills or treating each other - and most are at least fair tippers, if not generous.

If we invite friends out to dinner then we pick up the tab and pay the tip.

In addition, to prevent theft and so that items are accounted for, a lot of times to split checks requires a manager's authorization/swipe. This isn't a big deal if it isn't busy, but it can be a disaster if it is. Not only that, someone will often come to me from a large party and ask, "Can I have the check for what I paid for?" You mean I have to get a manager, sort through dozens of items, figure out what you got and neglect the rest of my patrons for 20 minutes? What if everyone in your party decided to do that? All my other tables would stiff me.

I dine out myself, probably more often than you do. It doesn't kill me to do the math. I accept that as part of going out.
Well, since it's an ongoing issue, perhaps the restaurants should ask the vendors if it's possible to design software to account for split tabs, etc. more efficiently
I agree.

Management is trying to turn as many tables as quickly as possible yielding more $$$. Management purchases a new POS system in order to standardize every transaction. This places a burden on both the customers and waitresses especially when the transaction does not follow the new standard. Customers are annoyed at waitresses, waitresses are annoyed at customers. If either complains to management, they just throw up their hands and say, "We can't do anything about it, it's the new POS system."

What do POS systems have to do with turning tables? Also, the whole point of a POS is to standardize transactions, keep track of product, collect tax, record waste, etc.

Aloha and Micros are the two biggest POS systems in the game. They are popularly used because they are efficient and work well.

I personally have no problem with the way modern POS systems work.

Depends on with whom I'm eating and where.

Eating lunch out, especially with 6 or 7 co-workers, and it ends up all on one tab, YES, I pay my part -- I'm not paying for someone's pricey entree when I had soup, sorry. We do the math and tally it up.

Out to nice dinner with close friends, we split it. Out with not-as-close friends who tend to order very, very expensive wine while I'm happy with my $11 cocktail -- ask for sperate checks up front.

it's the establishments fault to be high-volume AND allow people to split checks 5 ways. A well run place that is high volume should have a set rule or standard that all servers must go by. One bar I worked at did not allow splitting tabs at all, it was up to the customers to work out amongst themselves.

Besides that the server has no business getting mad a customers, without them you wouldn't make more than minimum wage.

I'd never heard of just splitting it even until I'd seen people talking about it on here. To me, that just doesn't make sense. You pay for what you order and ask for seperate checks- it couldn't be more simple. Maybe because my friends and I are all middle class- I just can't imagine having so much money that you wouldn't even think about how much you're spending. When we go out, some people drink, some don't, some order dessert, some don't, some are on diets so don't each much...why one person who ordered drinks, dinner, and dessert would pay as much as a person who ordered soup and salad makes no sense to me.

I would feel as though I'm annoying the waitress by asking for separate checks. Is that really necessary? Usually if I'm with a friend, she'll pick up the tab one time and I the next, or we'll just split it.

I wouldn't ask for separate checks at the beginning of the meal, no way. Why **** off the people who are going to have control of your food!

I think that's the way it should be. Getting separate checks seems childish. You really can't figure it out in three minutes just sitting there at the table? Most of the time--for work lunches and whatnot--it's expected that it will be split evenly. That's how grownups handle a check. Occasionally, with one group I have lunch with, one guy and me want a glass of wine and the rest of them are drinking soda. Then we both throw in extra. That's just common courtesy.

It's called socialism.
