Actually, I think this is about the the OP's self-esteem being bruised by criticism of his dishwashing ability. I find that rather bizarre, particularly since he still holds a grudge about it a couple of years later.

Clearly the mother-in-law knew the limitations of her dishwasher, and wanted the dishes washed/rinsed well so they'd come clean in the dishwasher. This is not odd, nor is it a big deal. What is odd, is starting a thread about it 2 years later.

If momma was so concerned about cleanliness, she wouldn't let them sit like this. There's your problem. Well, hers now.

My MIL told me early on in our relationship that I was not allowed to help with dishes because she was particular about things (didn't want dishes stacked, etc.). I was happy to oblige.

My dishwasher is located in Minnesota at the moment and when he is not home my dishwasher is located at the ends of my arms, they are called my hands. I see no need for a dishwasher that is electric especially if I have to "wash" the dishes before I put them in the electric excessive water & electric using dishwasher.

I haven't done dishes in 30+ years at my Mother's home because I never did them right, not an issue with me at all, she can do her own.
