The teacher probably felt they were doing their job well by taking this approach.

This is why diversity training is so useless. All it does is reinforce stereotypes.
While I somewhat agree, I believe this "teacher" is in his "church" doing free, bizarre relationship classes.

Or a history class where ethnicity played a factor in an event, and some classmates may have a family or personal involvement in what happened.

Or a religion class where different races traditionally have different religions.

Yes I agree how one's race has relevance in understanding/ relating to a certain area of discussion

Believe me I am not one to downplay race (I've had encounters where you can't help but figure race was a trigger)

I think it was the context, of how the instructor supposedly inquired about the race infront of other people, it can be a sensitive issue, let alone additional aspects if one was of mixed race. The OP was already touchy that the instructor always talked about race

Correct, and it's not ok to ask one person to speak for an entire race, which sounds like what she was getting at here.

The OP already claims it wasn't the church class, but it's really hard to imagine him being in college.

Is that supposed to be passive aggressive?

^^^ Look! He's back!

Of course, he's not back to actually answer anything.

OP, given your very bizarre threads and the tone of most of your posts, I too find it hard to believe that you're in college. I guess I'm being passive-aggressive too?

The OP has given us very little information about what this class is and has been consistently vague throughout the thread. He’s also said that the teacher talks about race a lot, but it might be a class where race is quite pertinent to the class- religion, sociology, history, political science, psychology, or even an English/literature class with a theme related to a specific sort of literature.

The subject could have been about being an outsider in a group, or a partial outsider in a group for all we know...
