From a male perspective, I seem to have noticed over the years that many, not all of course, girls/women are just not very nice to each other. Also I've heard females speak enviously about the easy rapport males have with each other. Why is this? Is it a competitive thing? Is it that men are more direct? Do most women grow out of it? We like to say that women are the gentler, nicer sex, but is it really true. Please help educate the father of a daughter.
I think a lot of it is biology. Female animals frequently do not get along. A female establishes dominance to protect herself because she is vulnerable and afraid. In human terms, the more misogynistic the society, the worse the women are, because they believe that without male approval, they are nothing.
I'm not sure if you're kidding Cat, but you're gonna get me in trouble again!!! I mean, maybe it's just the lowest denominator that is. We all know men that are very combative, mean and nasty and always ready to fight. Is this just the female lowest common denominator?
Women are just flat out Moderator cut: inappropriate. I have more guy friends for this exact reason. Women are critical and judgemental of other women. Be it your BFF for 20 years or someone you just met.....sizing each other up is our way of life....LOL

So you're saying that it is the competitive thing they have with other females, as far as who can snag the prize bull?

Because we're manly men and we do manly things. I just stepped on a cockroach. It's Miller time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm...I notice men being very competitive and making fun of each other - the difference is, most don't seem to take it to heart. They are more open about it too.
A lot of women will do the same thing, but they take it personally. I think women's relationships with each other are closer emotionally, and so emotions tend to run higher in general.
The cattiness is the feminine way of being competitive; "feminine" meaning it is simply less direct.
I think women have been conditioned to be less direct because society made it so we had to be. It used to be that women had little direct control over their own lives, and so they had to find subtle ways to influence things. Though that may not be the case now completely, a very direct woman may be seen as masculine or harsh, when the same behavior is perfectly acceptable in a man.
That said, there are a lot of non-catty, cool women out there who support each other & don't get upset over every little thing. And yes, age/maturity has a lot to do with it.
