Because a streetcar doesn't really make any financial sense right now, the only way you're going to see it is for tourism. Specifically, the College World Series. I predict the first streetcar route will go back and forth from TD Ameritrade stadium to the Old Market. The idea that people would walk between the two during the CWS was a complete failure, but if they could hop on a free streetcar, perhaps they would spend time and money in the Old Market instead of taking the SUV to McDonalds.

i was in my mid teens when i rode a streetcar for the last time . loved it when from 20th and lake went downtown . when not many people on the streetcar the operator would drive fast as it would go so to get up speed for the hill by Central . the car would rock n roll all the way . cold in winter and hot in summer .

I wish I'd have memories like that. Doesn't sound like it was so great at the time, but now it's a gem because it's no longer here

I am sure we have all seen it, but look at what we used to have.

Omaha would be a very different city than it is now if they hadn't torn all of these up 60 some years ago.

Vastly different. I bet none of us would be able to imagine close to what it would be like. Now we'll never know, but I'm sure it would have been so much more dense than it is today. I bet we wouldn't be any farther west than where I-680 is today, but we'd at least have our current population, probably more.

I can't help but feel more confident about streetcars with all of the new apartments springing up in and around downtown. If we can get more people living DT, a route from Midtown/UNMC to Downtown would make total sense.

No I think Omaha would just be a larger city but with a denser core to match. Besides, white flight had way more things to do with it than streetcars.

I'm sure it will happen in the next 5-10 years. I think the catalyst will be some of the big employers in the area coming out in support of it.

Agreed. It simply isn't happening without the backing of a few of the big players in Omaha.

Mutual and UNMC to be specific.

It is kind of amusing how many big dollar companies are in Omaha, yet no one volunteers to help either raise funds or fund certain projects Omaha could really use.

But a lot of them do a lot of good too, so it's not like nothing gets done.
